The 2003 men's University and FILA Cadet National Championships will be held April 23-26 in Palatine, Ill. on the campus of Harper College. Competition will be held in the Wellness and Sports Hall (Building M) located at 1200 West Algonquin Road. The event was moved from Northwestern Univ. due to a conflict with a football pep rally scheduled for Welsh-Ryan Arena during the same weekend. "While we are disappointed that we could not continue to hold this event at Northwestern this year, we feel that Harper College will provide a perfect environment for this event," USA Wrestling Director of National Events Pete Isais stated. "We look forward to seeing this event continue to grow in numbers while also providing exciting action for fans." Athletes that have purchased airline tickets to Chicago for these tournaments will not have to change travel arrangements. Harper College is located just 17 miles from the Chicago O'Hare Airport. The University National Championships in both styles, freestyle and Greco-Roman, is a qualifier for the partially funded tour to the 2003 Olympic Hopes Tournament in Budapest, Hungary, August 1-3. All qualifiers for this event must be 19-23 years of age (1981-1984). If the champion does not meet the age criteria, USA Wrestling will choose an alternate. The University Greco-Roman competition also serves as a qualifier for all weight classes except 50 kg for the 2003 U.S. Senior World Team Trials to be held June 20-22 in Indianapolis, Ind. The men's University National Championships are open to only men's wrestlers born between 1979 and 1985. The wrestler's class must have graduated from high school. The FILA Cadet National Championships will qualify winners for a partially subsidized international tour. The FILA Cadet National Championships is open only to wrestlers born between 1986 and 1987. Wrestlers born in 1988 may compete with a written statement from a medical officer attesting that the athlete is of sufficient physical and emotional maturity to compete at this level. Last year, Andy Hrovat (Ann Arbor, Mich./Cliff Keen WC) was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the University men's freestyle division while Jordan Holm (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Panther WC) won the award in University Greco-Roman. The Most Outstanding Wrestlers in the FILA Cadet National Championships were Eric Tannenbaum (Naperville, Ill.) in freestyle and Brent Metcalf (Davison, Mich.) in Greco-Roman. The host hotel for this event is the Holiday Inn Rolling Meadows in Rolling Meadows, Ill. The hotel phone number is (847) 259-5000.
