COLUMBIA, Mo. On Saturday, March 08, at the Hearnes Center in Columbia, Mo, the Oklahoma State Cowboys captured the Big 12 Team Title with 101.5 points, 46 points more than runner-up University of Missouri. The championship round looked more like an Oklahoma State versus "The Big 12" dual meet. Oklahoma State had nine finalists and left with six champions. The other three Cowboys brought home two runner-up finishes and one third place finish. Missouri and Oklahoma each had two champions, but Missouri came in second place with 55.5 points over Oklahoma's 51.5 points. Nebraska came in fourth place with 39.5 points and Iowa State in fifth with 26.5 points. At 125 pounds, Oklahoma's Bo Maynes defeated Oklahoma States's Skyler Holman, 4-1. Maynes put the first points on the board with a takedown at the end of the first period. Then, Maynes chose down and earned the escape point. In the third period, Holman started from the bottom position, but did not earn his escape point until riding time had been earned. After a 4-1 decision over Oklahoma's Witt Durden, Oklahoma State's133-pounder Johnny Thompson became a three-time Big Twelve Champion. In the first period, Thompson scored a takedown and Durden quickly escaped. Second period, Durden chose down but was unable to get the escape point. Thompson selected down in the third period and immediately escaped. In their fourth match up of the year, Teyon Ware of Oklahoma advanced to a 3-1 series advantage over Oklahoma State's Zack Esposito with a 5-2 decision. No points were put on the board in the first period. Second period, Esposito chose down and escaped in :18. That remained the only point on the board going into the third period. Ware chose down and escaped in :17. Ware scored a takedown, followed by an escape by Esposito. Ware scored another takedown off of Esposito's shot with ten seconds left. In a close 149-pound match, Jerrod Sanders of Oklahoma State defeated Travis Shulfelt of Nebraska, 7-5. Sanders earned the first takedown, followed by an escape by Shufelt. Second period, Shufelt chose the bottom position and was released after Sanders established 1:37 of riding time. With a tied score of 2-2, Sanders chose bottom and quickly reversed Shufelt. An escape by Shufelt brought the score to 4-3. Shufelt took Sanders down, who quickly escaped, bringing the score to 6-5. No other points were scored but Sanders riding time advantage point was added. At 157 pounds, Shane Roller Oklahoma State captured his first Big Twelve Championship after defeated Missouri's Kenny Burleson, 8-5. Burleson put the first points on the board with a takedown over Roller, who then escaped. Going into the second period trailing 2-1, Roller chose down and escaped to tie the score. After a scramble, Roller came out on top, making the score 4-2. Burleson reversed Roller, who then escaped. Down 5-4 going into the third period, Burleson chose bottom and escaped with :36 on the riding time clock in Roller's advantage. Roller scored the next take down and rode Burleson out for the rest of the match, securing a riding time point and the victory. In the 165-pound match, Tyron Woodley of Missouri defeated Nick Passalano of Iowa State, 5-1 in sudden victory overtime. With no points scored, Passalano chose down in the second period. After escaping, Passalano was warned for stalling. Third period, Woodley chose down and tied the score 1-1 after escaping. No more points were scored, taking the match into sudden victory overtime. Fifteen seconds into overtime, Woodley took Passalano to his back for the win. At 174 pounds, Oklahoma State's Chris Pendleton captured his first Big Twelve Championship with a 7-3 decision over Oklahoma's Robbie Waller. Pendleton scored the first takedown and rode Waller for :56 before Waller earned a reversal. Pendleton again gained the lead with an escape point and another takedown. With a 5-2 lead going into the second period, Pendleton chose the bottom position and quickly escaped. In the third period, Waller chose down and escaped, but not before Pendleton brought his riding time advantage to 1:01. Pendleton warned for stalling with :20 left in the match. In the 184-pound match, Scott Barker of Missouri major decisioned Jake Rosholt of Oklahoma State, 9-1. Barker gained a quick 2-0 lead with a takedown over Rosholt, who was warned for stalling. With Rosholt unable to escape, Barker gained 2:48 of riding time. In the second period, Barker chose down, escaped, and scored a takedown. Barker warned for stalling. Rosholt again warned for stalling, giving Barker another point. Trailing 6-0, Rosholt chose neutral and was again taken down by Barker. Barker was again warned for stalling, putting a point on the scoreboard for Rosholt. The 197-pound match served as a rematch for second-ranked Justin Ruiz of Nebraska and third-ranked Muhammed Lawal of Oklahoma State. After losing to Ruiz 5-3 in their season dual, Lawal got his revenge by defeating Ruiz 7-4. Lawal scored the first takedown of the match, followed by a quick escape by Ruiz. With :10 left in the first period, Lawal used a double leg to take Ruiz down again. Trailing 4-1, Ruiz chose the bottom position in the second period and escaped. Lawal warned for stalling. Third period, Lawal chose bottom and escaped, bringing the score to 5-2. Another takedown for Lawal and an escape for Ruiz brought the score to 7-3. Ruiz got one more point after Lawal was warned for stalling for a second time. A hard-fought heavywight match against Missouri's Kevin Herron made Will Gruenwald Oklahoma State's sixth Big Twelve Champion for 2003. Gruenwald scored the first takedown, and Herron quickly escaped. Down by one going into the second period, Herron chose down and escaped. In the third period, Gruenwald chose the bottom position and reversed Herron with two seconds left in the match, winning 4-3.
