OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY WRESTLING  News release for the week ending December 3, 2000    It's an early-season acid test as Oregon State faces a tough field at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Classic    FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1 - SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2  Oregon State at Cliff Keen Las Vegas Classic; all day    Oregon State is eager to see how it stacks up against the country's best competition at this stage in the season, and the Beavers (1-0 overall, 1-0 Pacific-10) get their chance at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Classic. The tournament, expected to include 53 schools, annually draws about half of the nation's top 25 teams.    "It's a high-quality tournament, a great format, a great arena to wrestle in - we're very excited about the competition," OSU head coach Joe Wells said. The tournament is similar to the NCAA Championships in that it awards eight places in each weight class, and the large brackets mean wrestlers have the potential to get a lot of matches under their belts.    "It's almost like a mini-nationals," Wells said. "We're going down there looking to place all 10 guys - that's the objective."    This will be the first scoring tournament of the season for OSU. The Beavers took 10 wrestlers to the non-scoring Omaha Open on Nov. 18 and all 10 placed; that lineup included two heavyweights and no 149-pounder.    The Las Vegas Classic will provide OSU with more of a challenge than did the field in Omaha or last weekend's 39-3 dual meet win over Stanford.    "There's no question," Wells said. "This is going to raise it up a notch, and then raise it round-by-round. We've got to be ready to compete."    Even with the tougher competition, Wells will be looking for the Beavers to keep wrestling in the same style they've shown so far.    "We want to keep putting on constant pressure, we want to be aggressive, and we want to get after those bonus points," Wells said, refering to wins by major decision, technical fall, pin or forfeit. "Bonus points are really big in a tournament like this."    The Beavers have five wrestlers in their lineup who have earned bonus points in at least 40 percent of their matches thus far, led by senior 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen's 100 percent (5 of 5). Junior 174-pounder Nathan Coy follows at 43 percent (3 of 7), with sophomore 141-pounder Shane Cunanan, sophomore 197-pounder Jason Lovell and freshman 165-pounder Jed Pennell all at 40 percent (2 of 5).    Oregon State will take six nationally-ranked wrestlers to the Las Vegas Classic: Jorgensen (No. 10 Amateur Wrestling News, No. 9 InterMat), Coy (No. 15 AWN, No. 19 IM), junior 125-pounder Nathan Navarro (No. 10 AWN, No. 8 IM), senior 133-pounder Ben Richards (No. 18 AWN, No. 19 IM), junior 184-pounder Isaac Weber (No. 17 AWN, No. 18 IM) and junior heavyweight Jason Cooley (No. 11  AWN, No. 12 IM).
