Cody Sanderson hired as UVSC Head Coach

Orem, Nev.- On September 27, 2002, Utah Valley State College became the first school to add wrestling in over 30 years. UVSC has taken the next step and announced the hiring of Cody Sanderson as the inaugural head coach of the Wolverine wrestling program.     Sanderson will lead UVSC's fledgling program into NCAA Division I status beginning this Fall.     "I'm excited to be a part of UVSC Athletics and a wrestling program that has the potential to be one of the top programs in the country," said Sanderson via a phone interview.     He added that he is excited to "come home" and be a part of "a great wrestling community that has a great base of wrestlers to work from."     Sanderson is currently serving as a volunteer assistant coach at Iowa State; his alma mater. Before assisting with the Iowa State program, Sanderson was a four-year starter for the Cyclones.     He was a four-time national qualifier, two-time All-American, and a two-time runner-up at the NCAA Championships.     He also won an individual title at the 2000 Big 12 Championships. Sanderson ended his career with 116 wins, 36 by fall.     He served as captain of the Cyclone squad in 1999 and 2000. Iowa State finished second in the NCAA in 2000 and fourth in 1999.     Sanderson has served as the Cyclone Wrestling Club Coach for the past three years where his team's competed in the University National Championships, United States National Championships, United States World Team Trials, Junior World Team Trials, and the Espoir National Championships. He has also served as an Administrative Assistant and volunteer assistant coach at Iowa State over the same time period.     Sanderson has assisted with the Utah National Team for the past seven years.     He is a certified Bronze Level Coach with USA Wrestling.     Sanderson earned his bachelor's degree from Iowa State in Psychology. He is the brother of Cael Sanderson. His brother was undefeated as an NCAA wrestler, winning 159 straight matches. Sanderson is from Heber City, Utah, where he was an All-State wrestler for Wasatch High.
