Conference Announces Wrestling Academic All-Big 12 Team

DALLAS - The Big 12 Conference takes great pleasure in honoring 16 student-athletes who have been named to the 2003 Wrestling Academic All-Big 12 Team, the conference office announced Monday.     Many of these student-athletes will participate in the seventh annual Big 12 Conference Wrestling Championship Saturday at the Hearnes Center in Columbia, Mo. Oklahoma is the defending Big 12 champion and also won the title in 1999. But Oklahoma State, currently ranked No. 1 in the nation, has won four of the six previous championships. The Cowboys had a remarkable regular season finishing undefeated at 17-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference.     Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the wrestling academic all-league squad consisted of 10 first-team members combined with six on the second team. First-team members are those student-athletes who have maintained a 3.20 or better grade-point average, while the second team are those who have recorded a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA in the classroom.     To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 grade point average or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
