Stephen Abas (Fresno, Calif./Sunkist Kids) and Kerry McCoy (Bethlehem, Pa./New York AC) have advanced out of their respective pools at the Cup of Independence in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Americans Eric Guerrero (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC), Chris Bono (Gilbert, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) and Joe Williams (Iowa City, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) all won their first pool matches as well.    Abas, a two-time U.S. World Team member, won by technical fall and fall in his two pool matches at 55 kg/121 lbs. He advances to the quarterfinals where he will meet Adcham Achilov of Uzbekistan, who placed fourth in the World Championships.    McCoy won by scores of 11-0 and 4-0 in his two pool matches to move on to the semifinals at 120 kg/264.5 lbs., where he will face 2001 CISM Military World Champion Nikolai Telegin of Russia. In the other semifinal is Artur Taimazov of Uzbekistan, a 2000 Olympic silver medalist and 2001 World silver medalist. Taimazov defeated McCoy in the quarterfinals of the 2000 Olympic Games.    Guerrero pined Azad Gimaev of Russia in his first pool match at 60 kg/132 lbs. and will wrestle 2001 Junior World Champion Ulan Nadyrbek Ulu of Kyrgystan. The winner of that match will advance to the quarterfinals.    Bono won by technical fall in his first pool bout and will square off with Aslibek Ysupov of Kyrgystan to advance to the quarterfinals at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.    Williams won his first pool match 7-0 at 74 kg/163 lbs. and will face Almazbek Askarov of Kyrgystan in his next match. Williams will advance to the semifinals if he wins that match. Askarov placed eighth at the 2000 Olympic Games.    At 96 kg/211.5 lbs., 2002 U.S. World Team member Tim Hartung (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) lost both of his pool matches to be eliminated from competition.
