North Idaho, Nassau lead team race after first day of National Junior College Championships

Rochester, Minn. - The 2003 National Junior College Wrestling Championships are underway in Rochester, Minn. This year's event is held in conjunction with the first annual USA Wrestling Collegiate Nationals.    After the first day of competition in Division I, second-ranked North Idaho topped the team race with 83 points, edging top-ranked Colby Community College by a mere two team points. Rounding out the top five DI team race were Ellsworth, Neosho, and Iowa Central, with 58.5, 53, and 52.5 points, respectively.    Leading the Division III team race is top-ranked Nassau with 58, with Harper trailing at 47.5, and Ridgewater with 22. Host team Rochester holds the No. 4 position with 16.5.    The first day of grappling found very few upsets, and in most cases, left many of the top ranked wrestlers still in the mix heading into the semifinal round.    At 125 pounds, the top three ranked wrestlers made their way to the semifinals. No. 1 ranked and 2002 runner up Nick Vogt (Meramec) will face No. 3 Josh Collins (Lincoln), while No. 2 Brett Allgood (Iowa Central)  will see Hector Mendez (Neosho).    Second-ranked Paul Collum (Iowa Central) edged out third-ranked Chad Willard (Neosho) at 133-pounds in the second preliminary round advancing to the semifinals. Collum will face No. 4 Tyshawn Scarlet (Nassau). The other semifinal pits No. 1 Erkin Tadzhimetov (Colby) against Leo Martinez (Pima).    At 141 pounds, the top three ranked wrestlers advanced to the semis. No. 1 Brian Miller (Colby) will meet Kelly Rydberg (Waldorf College), while No.2 and 3, Chris Nedens (North Idaho) and Eric Sabot (Northwest Wyoming) will face off in the semis.    At 149 the top two ranked wrestlers met in the quarters. Top-ranked Keri Stanley (North Idaho) won a 4-0 decision over No. 2 OT Johnson (Colby) and will meet No. 3 ranked Ariel Ciufulescu (Neosho) in the semis. On the flip side of the bracket, No. 4 Luke Salazar (NW Wyoming) will face No. 5 Mark Dickman (Meramec).    Proving that the coaches who vote on individual rankings know their stuff, the 157-pound semifinals find the top two wrestlers facing each other, Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov (Colby) and Stryder Davis (North Idaho), while the other semi pits the No. 3 and 4 men against each other, Mike Rio (Harper) and Steve Sommer (Iowa Central)    In 165-pound action, top ranked Adam Benton( Ellsworth) will face fourth-ranked Carlos Patrick (Nassau) while two unranked wrestlers meet for the other semi. Carl Zinnel (Iowa Central) will meet John Zamora (North Idaho).    Top-ranked Aaron Meister (Labette) will face off against fourth-ranked Tyson Springer (North Idaho) in the 174-pound weight class, while sixth-ranked Alibek Pardalkulov (Colby) will meet Ryan Luna (Meramec).    The top rated 184-pounders find themselves on opposite sides of the brackets. No. 1 CB Dalloway (Colby) will take on Ken Prophette (Ellsworth), while No. 2 Mike Massenzio (Bergen) will face Dan Johnson (Waubonsee).    In 197-pound action, second-ranked Tucker Downey (North Idaho) fell to top-ranked Josh Janousek (Ridgewater) in the second round preliminaries. Janousek will face sixth-ranked Nick Hiller (Ellsworth) in the semis, while fifth-ranked James Williams (Labette) will take on Bridger Sacher (Clackamus).    In the heavyweight division, top-ranked Tyler Rhodes (NW Wyoming) will meet third-ranked Israel Silva (North Idaho), while No. 2 Dathon Miller (Lasson) will face Chris McDonald (Waldorf College).    The semifinal round gets underway at 10:30 a.m., with the finals set for 7 p.m. The USA Wrestling Collegiate Nationals begin tomorrow at 9 a.m.     Semifinal pairings  125 Pounds  Nick Vogt (Meramec) v.
