Cumberland College in Kentucky retained its No. 1 team spot in TheMat.com U.S. College Women's Wrestling Rankings by holding the top spot for February 2003. Cumberland College, coached by Kip Flanik, has four wrestlers with No. 1 individual rankings this month: Sarah Hayes at 112 pounds, Jessica Shirley at 121 pounds, Alaina Berube at 138.5 pounds and Toccara Montgomery at 158.5 pounds. Cumberland was among the college programs that competed in the Dave Schultz Memorial International in Colorado Springs in February. Missouri Valley College remained at No. 2, after getting its season off going during the second semester. The lone Viking with a No. 1 individual ranking Hillary Leith at 169.5 pounds. Missouri Valley competed in a dual meet and two tournaments in Canada and two tournaments in the United States. The Vikings won the college team title at the Cougar Open in Canada and was the team champion at the new Northwest Conference Championships in Oregon. Neosho County CC moved up on spot to No. 3 as a team, with a pair of No. 1 individuals: Mary Kelly at 105.5 pounds and Elena Mena at 147.5 pounds. Pacific University had the biggest jump in the rankings, moving past two teams to the No. 4 position. The Boxers won dual meets against both Missouri Valley and Menlo College, then had a solid third place finish at the Northwest Conference Championships which it hosted last seek. Rounding out the top six teams in women's college wrestling are the women's varsity programs at No. 5 UM-Morris and No. 6 Menlo College. Menlo boasted an individual No. 1 athlete with freshman Lindsay Owens at 130 pounds. Club programs at Princeton, Cal-State Bakersfield and Hawaii were also recognized in the team rankings. There was no TheMat.com U.S. Women's College ranking in January, as the U.S. programs were mostly idle during that month.
