This year will mark the first time a Greco-Roman division has been included at the Veterans National Wrestling Championships as part of the U.S. National Championships. This event is set to take place May 7-10, 2003 in Las Vegas, Nev. at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The Veterans Division is open to men 35 and older and is separated into five age divisions; Division A (born 1963-68), Division B (born 1958-62), Division C (born 1953-57), Division D (born 1948-52) and Division E (born 1947 and before). The weight classes for this division are 58 kg, 63 kg, 69 kg, 76 kg, 85 kg, 97 kg and 130 kg. The decision to include a Veterans Greco-Roman division at the U.S. National Championships was made in January by USA Wrestling after discussions with a committee of Veterans. "The idea came from a core group of Veterans who have been very involved in the sport of wrestling and very interested in bringing a Veteran's division of Greco-Roman wrestling to the U.S. National Championships," said USA Wrestling Director of National Teams Mitch Hull. The Veterans division has been in place worldwide for over a decade and the Veterans World Championships continues to grow in size and intensity each year. "The turnout of Veterans wrestlers at the world level has been getting larger and more competitive," said Hull. "A number of World and Olympic champions continue to compete, demonstrating their desire to remain in the sport," he added. The U.S. National Championships are set to take place at the Las Vegas Convention Center May 7-10. This event will feature top wrestlers in men's freestyle, men's Greco-Roman, women's freestyle, Veterans freestyle and Veterans Greco-Roman. Veterans competition will take place May 7-9. Veterans Greco-Roman registration begins Wednesday, May 7 at 7:30 a.m; weigh-ins are at 9:00 a.m, followed by preliminaries through finals at 11:00 a.m. Veterans freestyle registration and weigh-ins begin Thursday, May 8 at 9:00 a.m. Freestyle preliminaries begin at 3:00 p.m. and continue through Friday, May 9 with finals starting at 4:00 p.m. The Senior U.S. Nationals in freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's divisions will begin Thursday, May 8 with registration at 1:00 p.m. and weigh-ins at 4:00 p.m. The entire event will conclude on Saturday, May 10 with Senior men's freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women's finals.
