COLORADO SPRINGS----The United States Olympic Committee has named 1988 Olympic freestyle wrestler Jim Scherr as its Senior Managing Director for Sport Resources.    USOC Acting Chief Executive Officer Scott Blackmun, who had held the important spot himself until November 1, appointed Scherr to the post over the weekend.    "This is a position critical to the success of our new approach to working with our National Governing Bodies," said Blackmun, who is a candidate for the permanent CEO position. "Jim Scherr has earned a great deal of respect as a result of his work in directing USA Wrestling as its Executive Director, and he will be a positive force in our sport partnerships with the NGBs."    Blackmun had held the critical position himself since April 19, but when CEO Norm Blake stepped away from the USOC in late October, he was tabbed by the USOC Executive Committee to take over the position on an acting basis.    "This position, which is critical to the development of our athletes and our success in the future, is too important to have vacant while the search is on for the permanent CEO," said Blackmun. "It's the right thing to do for our athletes and NGBs. Jim Scherr is an outstanding leader. I did not want to wait and lose the chance to bring him on board."    Scherr will begin his assignment with the USOC on a part-time basis later this month and report on a full-time basis at the USOC on December 11.    He has been the Executive Director of USA Wrestling since 1990, and led the sport to some of its greatest success, as well as financial recovery and stability, during his tenure.    "It is not without mixed emotions that I leave USA Wrestling," said Scherr. "A better part of my life has been spent in the pursuit of the Olympic ideal, first as an athlete, then as an Executive Director and a volunteer leader with the USOC. To be able to make a contribution on a daily basis in helping athletes and national governing bodies in their pursuit of excellence is a tremendous honor and opportunity. I'm excited about working to further the Olympic ideal as part of a great organization."    Scherr has been a member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the USOC and served on the organization's Audit Committee and NGB Council. He is a former member of the USOC Athletes Advisory Council and International Games Preparation Committee.    The new USOC executive is from Mobridge, South Dakota, and graduated from the University of Nebraska, where he won the NCAA Division I wrestling title in 1984 at 177 pounds.    "This is a tremendous addition to the USOC's professional management team," said USOC Chairman Bill Hybl. "Jim Scherr has recorded one of the great success stories in our family's history, from athlete to administrator, and we are proud to have the chance to name an Olympic athlete to one of our top staff leadership positions."    Scherr and his wife, April, have one son (Evan) and reside in Colorado Springs.
