"California Kids" Guerrero and Abas headline U.S. freestylers Team USA wrestlers Eric Guerrero and Stephen Abas are California natives, and very popular within the wrestling community in the state. Guerrero grew up right in San Jose, winning three state titles for San Jose Independence High School. Abas was also a three-time state champion in California, and went on the star at Fresno State. Both wrestlers won three NCAA titles. And both are now ranked No. 1 in their weight classes in the USA in freestyle wrestling. Both are seeking spots on the 2004 U.S. Olympic team. There should be many fans at the Titan Games supporting USA Wrestling's California Kids. Hail Cael: College wrestling legend seeks international fame The American sports community knows all about Cael Sanderson, the first undefeated four-time NCAA champion in wrestling history. Sanderson made history at Iowa State, and has captivated the wrestling community like no other athlete since Dan Gable. However, the world has yet to learn about this special athlete and person. In 2001, Sanderson made the U.S. World team, but chose to skip the event when it was moved out of New York after the 9/11 attack to finish his senior season in college. In 2003, Sanderson was again on the U.S. World team, but the U.S. team did not compete, due to a specific threat of violence toward the team if it attended the championships in Iran. Sanderson has since beaten the 1996 Olympic Champion Khajimurad Magomedov of Russia at the 2002 Kurt Angle Classic, but most of the world has yet to see this exciting athlete in action. This great American secret may soon be shared with the world, starting at the Titan Games. Rulon Gardner: Can a man win with nine toes? The story is legend now. One year ago, Olympic hero Rulon Gardner was stranded overnight in the Wyoming mountains during a winter snowmobile excursion and barely survived the ordeal. He suffered severe frostbite, and ultimately lost a toe to amputation. After months of physical therapy and rehabilitation, Gardner returned to the mats this fall for competition for the first time. He has now competed a few times, but the question still remains: can he return to his gold-medal form? The 2003 season, headlined by these Titan Games, will show Rulon as well as his opponents just how far Gardner has recovered from his serious and unfortunate accident. Can a champion Greco-Roman athlete missing a toe return to Olympic glory? George, McMann seek spot in first Olympic Games with women's wrestling The only new sport at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games is women's freestyle wrestling, with four weight classes up for grabs. Two of America's best women athletes, top contenders for that 2004 U.S. Olympic team, will be competing at the Titan Games. Both Tina George and Sara McMann are now ranked No. 1 in their weight classes in the USA. George wrestles at 55 kg/121 lbs. and McMann is at 63 kg/138.75 lbs., both Olympic weight classes. These talented stars are very experienced. Both are members of the first U.S. Olympic Training Center women's wrestling resident program. George, a 2002 World silver medalist, has competed in four World Championships. McMann has been on three U.S. World teams. The Titan Games is a very important event for these athletes in their preparation for the Olympic quest next year. Paulson seeks to turn silvers into gold You might call him Mr. Silver. Brandon Paulson has established himself as one of the greatest Greco-Roman wrestlers in the world, capturing a silver medal as a college student at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, and following that up in 2001 with a World silver medal. If you go back in his past, he was also a Junior World silver medalist. Now older, with a career and family, Paulson has chosen to go for the gold one more time, by competing and training for the 2004 Olympic Games. Paulson is still motivated with the desire to be a World and Olympic champion, a quest that will be enhanced by competing in major events such as the Titan Games. T.C. Dantzler - Mr. Explosive seeks World recognition U.S. Greco-Roman star T.C.Dantzler has gained a reputation as one of the most explosive wrestlers in the world. His ability to lift and throw his opponents have excited sports fans and given his opponents a reason to be fearful. At the 2002 World Championships, Dantzler provided an offensive display which made him a fan favorite at the event held in Moscow, Russia. Now, Dantzler is seeking to turn his popular style into dominance in the standings. Dantzler, a USOTC resident athlete, seeks his first position on a U.S. Olympic team, as well as his first World-level medal. He will move much closer to that goal if he can beat his Titan Games opponent Filiberto Azcuy of Cuba, who won gold medals at both the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games. Rulon seeks revenge for recent loss to Cuban Lopez A major rematch is on tap for the Titan Games, when 2000 Olympic and 2001 World Champion Rulon Gardner faces young Cuban star Mijian Lopez of Cuba in the Greco-Roman heavyweight bout during the USA vs. Cuba dual meet on Friday night. This past Sunday, just a few days ago, Lopez upset Gardner in the gold-medal finals of the Dave Schultz Memorial International in Colorado Springs, Colo. Lopez won a 3-0 decision, with a takedown and a two-point gutwrench turn, and shut down Gardner's famous pressing attack. It was Gardner's first loss since returning to the mats after his frostbite injuries of a year ago. Gardner is motivated for revenge in Friday night's battle with Lopez. Many rematches from Schultz Memorial are on tap The Gardner/Lopez match is not the only rematch on the card from last week's Dave Schultz International event. A number of the other Titan Games pairings will be a re-wrestle of matches held less than a week ago in Colorado Springs. 120 kg/264.5 lbs. - Rulon Gardner (USA) vs. Mijian Lopez (Cuba) - Lopez won, 3-0 in gold-medal finals 55 kg/121 lbs. - Tina George (USA) v. In the dual meet on Friday night, college legend Cael Sanderson of the USA will face past World Champion and Olympic silver medalist Yoel Romero of Cuba. Romero is the proven athlete, with medals in all of the sport's major events. Sanderson, the most successful U.S. college athlete in wrestling history, is just making his name on the international level. Romero is powerful, and wrestles a quick and aggressive style. Sanderson moves with speed and fluent motions, and is considered a tremendous technician. Will it be proven veteran Romero or young talent Sanderson to win this battle of the ages? This is perhaps a preview of the 2004 Athens competition. Romero has had a long-time rivalry with American wrestlers, including a series of bitter battles with 1997 World Champion Les Gutches. Will the Romero/Sanderson match lead to a feisty new rivalry? First-time dual with all three styles together The Titan Games is a first for international wrestling. It is the first major international competition where men's freestyle, women's freestyle and men's Greco-Roman athletes will be on the same team, competing in dual meet matches. Dual meet tournaments have proven very entertaining, with events such as the World Cup and Goodwill Games displaying the excitement of the team format. However, never before have all three Olympic styles been displayed side-by-side in a dual meet format. Gruenwald a math teacher counting his wins 2000 Olympic James Gruenwald is perh
