Mike McArthur of Peyton, Colo. has been named as Interim Assistant Resident Freestyle Coach for USA Wrestling, announced USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender. He will help coach the men's freestyle athletes who participate in the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) resident athlete program in Colorado Springs, Colo. He will also help coach the many U.S. freestyle wrestlers who come to Colorado Springs from across the nation to train on a short-term basis. "We are fortunate to have such a capable coach right here in our community," said Rich Bender, USA Wrestling Executive Director. "Mike has proven himself on the elite level and will be a great addition to our program." McArthur will work with wrestling legend Dan Gable, who has been named Interim Head Resident Freestyle Coach for USA Wrestling. USA Wrestling needed freestyle coaching assistance when Lincoln McIlravy, who served as Resident Freestyle Coach for over one year, resigned his position in order to return to competition as an athlete. "I am honored to be asked to coach," said McArthur. "I'm glad to use the gifts I have to provide technical help, encouragement and strategy for the athletes. I am pleased to help them to pursue their dreams. I look forward to working with USA Wrestling*s national coaching staff in this position." McArthur was a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team staff and the 1995 World Team staff. He was a head coach of the 2000 and 2001 U.S. World Cup teams. He has coached numerous U.S. teams on international tours, including Russia, Cuba, Turkey, Belarus and Hungary. He is a club coach with Team Excel, and previously served as a club coach with Athletes in Action. He has been an assistant coach at the Univ. of Minnesota, Oklahoma State Univ. and the Air Force Academy. McArthur also coached on the high school level in Minnesota. As an athlete, McArthur was a two-time All-American for the University of Minnesota, and won two Minnesota state high school titles. He placed fourth in the 1979 World Cup, and was an alternate to the 1976 U.S. Olympic team. McArthur currently works as the National Chapter Director of the Fellowship of Christian Cowboys, and will remain in that position. McArthur will work directly with USA Wrestling*s talented National Coaching staff, including Gable, National Freestyle Coach Kevin Jackson and Freestyle Developmental Coach Dave Bennett. During the time that USA Wrestling has Interim Head and Assistant Resident Freestyle Coaches, USA Wrestling will conduct a national search for a full-time coach to serve in the position. USA Wrestling hopes to name a new Resident Freestyle Coach this spring.
