* Wrestling legend Dan Gable, Boxer Evander Holyfield, and Other Olympic Greats To Receive Titan Games' Highest Recognition COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - An outstanding array of U.S. Olympians will be honored when the United States Olympic Committee kicks-off the 2003 Titan Games at the "Titan Games Night of Champions presented by Bank of America," on Feb. 13, at the San Jose State University Events Center. The VIP affair will be a star-studded beginning to the first round of the three-day Titan Games combat sporting event. Hosted by Bank of America and the United States Olympic Committee, the VIP gala will honor wrestling legend Dan Gable, heavyweight world champion and 1984 Olympic bronze medalist Evander Holyfield, as well as five other Olympic greats representing the sports competing in the Titan Games. The VIP event will take place at the Titan Games arena in the Event Center at San Jose State University and begins at 6:00 p.m. Following the VIP gala, general session admission for the first round of Titan Games competitions will begin at 7:30 p.m., with USA vs. Mexico in the sports of boxing, karate and judo. Several Olympic Titans will be available for an autograph session at 7:30 p.m. during general admission. The "Titan Games Night of Champions presented by Bank of America" kick-off event promises attendees VIP treatment, hospitality and access to the special ceremony honoring legendary Olympic Titans in the sports of boxing, fencing, weightlifting, judo, taekwondo and athletics. Also included in the evening's program are sport demonstrations in boxing, karate and judo featuring national, junior national and up-and-coming youth stars from each sport. A special appearance by the Ernie Reyes World Action Team will provide a fast-moving and dynamic show of stunts and martial arts demonstrations. The Team has thrilled audiences throughout the world and is expected to be a crowd favorite at the special VIP event. Known as one of the greatest martial arts masters of the 20th century, Reyes is a graduate of San Jose State University and founder of the West Coast World Martial Arts Association that owns 15 martial arts schools in the San Jose area. His association has a reputation for producing some of the finest black belt students, including national champions, for more than 25 years. Olympic Titans to Be Honored: Olympic Titans to be honored at the "Titan Games Night of Champions" event include Evander Holyfield, a legend in the boxing world and founder of the Holyfield Foundation. Holyfield began his boxing career at the age of eight and evolved into a powerhouse World Heavyweight Champion. Today, Evander dedicates his time to furthering the lives of youth. "I am honored to be recognized at the first-ever Titan Games international sporting event and to represent the great Olympians in the history of American boxing. The sports featured in this event are by far some of the most physical sports known to man," said Holyfield. "To have a front row seat to the opening boxing matches and to be able to witness today's young and powerful talent from around the world is not something you get to see every day." Dan Gable, 1972 freestyle wrestling Olympic gold medalist and 1971 World Champion, is also a legendary coach in the sport of freestyle wrestling. A true Titan, he is the only U.S. wrestler in an Olympic tournament to compete without a point being scored on him. His commitment to coaching and excellence in athlete performance led to 15 NCAA titles as head coach at the University of Iowa. Gable served as the head coach of three U.S. Olympic teams (1980, 1984, 2000) and has been head coach of 11 World Cup teams. He has also coached a number of U.S. World teams, as well as American squads at the Goodwill Games. Gable was a two-time NCAA champion at Iowa State University, setting the consecutive college win record recently broken by current star Cael Sanderson (one of the U.S. athletes competing at the Titan Games). Six-time Olympian and bronze medalist fencer Peter Westbrook (1976, '80, '84, '88, '92, '96) will also join the lineup of Olympic legends for the VIP "Titan Games Night of Champions" ceremony. Founder of The Peter Westbrook Foundation, Westbrook is one of the greatest fencers in history of the Olympic Movement. Through his foundation, he has enriched the lives of numerous inner-city youth by introducing them to the sport of fencing. Tommy Kono, a two-time gold and one-time silver medalist in weightlifting (1952, '56, '60), is arguably the most versatile and greatest lifter America has ever produced. This five-foot-six-inch Japanese American set 26 world records in four different weight classes. He is the most successful Japanese American weightlifting competitor of the 20th century and is known around the world as a pioneer in the sport of weightlifting. An active Bay Area community sportsman, Mike Swain, 1988 Olympic bronze medalist in judo, was the first male World Champion in the sport of judo as well as the first four-time judo Olympian (1980, '84, '88, '92). Also to be honored is three-time Olympian Ed Burke (1964, '68 '84) who competed in the hammer throw. Representing the sport of taekwondo is a new-generation Olympic Titan, Steven Lopez. Lopez, who will compete in the Titan Games, made history at the 2000 Olympic Games when he became the first official Olympic gold medalist in the sport of taekwondo.
