The Liberty Nationals will take place February 8-9 in Liberty, Missouri. It is the third of five events that comprise the new USA Wrestling Folkstyle Ultimate Challenge Series for youth wrestlers. The Liberty Nationals will be held in the Mabee Athletic Center at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. this weekend. "We are real excited about this event," said Bill Gossett, Liberty Nationals Tournament Director. "We will host 1,200 entries this year, and had to close off the entry after the registration deadline. We are excited about being part of the Ultimate Challenge Series." Gossett indicated that there will be some great national-level matchups in all age levels this year. He had athletes from 28 different states pre-register for the tournament. "The classiest wrestlers in the nation are coming to compete here this year," said Gossett. "This will be a tremendous event." Admission for spectators to this event is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for students 12 & under, and children under 5 are free. For more information on this tournament, visit www.libertynationalswrestling.com or call Bill Gossett at 816-781-2111. The Folkstyle Ultimate Challenge Series provides an opportunity for wrestlers between the ages of 9 and 15 to earn points toward the Dominator Award. Age groups eligible for this award are 9-10 year olds (Division I), 11-12 year olds (Division II) and 13-15 year olds (Division III). Other age divisions participate in all of the Series events, but only the three divisions mentioned are eligible for the Dominator Award. The top three point earners in each of the three divisions will receive a "Dominator Award" to recognize their accomplishments in this unique folkstyle series of events. The athlete who scores the most Dominator points will also be recognized as the "Ultimate Dominator" and receive a special award. In pursuit of these awards, wrestlers earn points by participation as well as by placing within the top eight of their weight class. The scoring system for the Ultimate Challenge Series awards 500 points for participation in each event, 1600 points for first place, 1200 points for second place, 1000 points for third place, 900 points for fourth place, 700 points for fifth place, 600 points for sixth place, 400 points for seventh place and 300 points for eighth place. If there is a tie in points for any of the top three places, the tie is determined by these criteria in order: most 1st place finishes, most 2nd place finishes, most 3rd place finishes, most overall wins and highest number of pins. The first two events of the Series were The Winter Classic in Danville, Ill. held November 22-23 and The Cotton Bowl Classic in Mesquite, Texas held December 27-28. The top four athletes in contention for Dominator awards have earned 4200 points by winning gold medals at both of the first two events. They include: Jon Sims from Indiana (Division I), Nick Lester from Missouri (Division II), Anthony Ramos from Illinois (Division II) and Eric McGill from Indiana (Division III). Following the Liberty Nationals, the Folkstyle Ultimate Challenger Series will wrap up with USA Wrestling's National Folkstyle Championships in Topeka, KS April 4-6 (www.usawks.com) and the 3rd Annual Virginia Challenge Middle School National Open in Norfolk, VA April 11-13 (www.virginiachallenge.org).
