U.S. Teams #1, #2 and #3 all shared the first-place trophy at the 20th Annual Concord Cup held this weekend in Concord, Calif. Japan placed second and Uzbekistan placed third. The U.S. teams were led by Rulon Gardner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Gardner, who made his second official appearance on the mat since his snowmobiling accident last February, won his only two matches by pin, both over Shermakhamad Kuziev of Uzbekistan. Japan did not have a super heavyweight on its roster. "I am feeling better and better with each match. I felt I was able to control more in the second match than in the first one," Gardner stated. "All of these matches are just stepping stones for the ultimate goals of competing in the World Championships and the 2004 Olympic Games." Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) won the gold medal at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. after winning all three of his matches. Bracken was dominant in his performances, with his closes match being a 5-2 decision over Asliddin Khudayberdiev of Uzbekistan. Brothers Keith Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) and Aaron Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) also won gold medals. Keith Sieracki did not allow a point to be scored on him at 74 kg/163 lbs. He defeated 2000 Olympic silver medalist Katsuhiko Nagata of Japan by pin (1:17) and technical superiority (10-0) while also downing Ruslan Biktyakov of Uzbekistan 3-0. "I felt a little tired at the exhibition match on Friday, but yesterday and today I was feeling a lot better," Keith Sieracki said. "Those were some good opponents I had out there. I haven't had much competition lately, so this was a good way for me to get back into the swing of things." Aaron Sieracki only wrestled one match in winning his gold medal at 84 kg/185 lbs. He defeated Djakhongir Turdiev of Uzbekistan 4-1. Masatoshi Toyota of Japan had very few international accomplishments before the Concord Cup, but with wins over Paulson, Lindsay Durlacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and Neal Rodak (San Diego, Calif./U.S. Navy), he captured first place at 55 kg/121 lbs. Toyota's biggest accomplishment before this event was placing fourth at the 1998 FILA Test Tournament. "This is a world-class tournament," Toyota said. "This was very difficult competition and I am happy to have placed first here. I hope this carries over to this year's World Championships." At 60 kg/132 lbs., Dilshod Aripov of Uzbekistan placed first. Aripov, the 2001 World Champion, beat out Makoto Sasamoto of Japan and 2002 U.S. World Team member James Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) for the gold medal. Aripov split matches with Gruenwald, but lost his only match to Sasamoto. Ironically, it was a win by Joe Warren (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) over Sasamoto that won the gold medal for Aripov. Evgeniy Erofailov of Uzbekistan captured the gold medal at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
