Team USA lineup set for Battle in the Bluffs International Dual; Olympic and World placers highlight

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA, February 3, 2003 - Two nationally-ranked wrestlers have filled the final two roster spots for Team USA as it prepares for the inaugural Battle in the Bluffs freestyle wrestling dual slated for Thursday, Feb. 13. 211.5-pounder Dean Morrison, currently ranked third, and 132-pounder C.C. Fisher, ranked sixth, complete the squad that will take on the National Team of Belarus at Kanesville Arena on the campus of Iowa Western Community College beginning at 7:00 p.m. On the other side of the mat, six athletes with extensive international experience will lead Belarus: including three former Olympians and four European Championship place-winners. "This US lineup is very experienced and extremely competitive, as is Belarus," noted Team USA Coach Mark Manning, currently the head wrestling coach at the University of Nebraska. "The match-ups at every weight will be very exciting." Morrison is originally from Ithaca, NY and currently resides at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. He is the defending New York Athletic Club Open champ and was runner-up at the Sunkist International Open. Morrison also finished third at last year's US Nationals, fifth at the Dave Schultz International and sixth at the World Team Trials. C.C. Fisher won the 2002 Rocky Mountain Regionals and finished fifth at the World Team Trials, sixth at the Dave Schultz International and seventh at the US Nationals. He also lives and trains in Colorado Springs. Great match-ups anticipated Leading off for Belarus at 121 pounds will be Alexander Kaminski who placed fifth in the 2000 Jr. Worlds and eighth in last year's European Championships. For Team USA it will be Eric Akin who placed second at the US Nationals, fourth at the Dave Schultz and eighth at the Kiev Grand Prix in 2002. He is originally from Kansas City, MO and was a four-time All-American for Iowa State University. He currently serves as an assistant coach at Nebraska Fisher will go up against Alexander Guzov at 132 pounds. Guzov finished eighth in the 2000 Olympics and fourth in both the 2001 World Military Championships and the 2002 European Championships. At 145.5 pounds for Belarus will be Siachei Dzmechanka. He placed fourth in the 2000 Olympics and second in the 2000 Europeans. Squaring off against Dzmechanka will be former University of Iowa star Bill Zadick, a national champion for the Hawkeyes in 1996. Zadick is currently ranked number two in the country at 145.5 pounds. He is the defending US National Champion and was the 2001 World Team Trials Champion. He finished second at the World Team Trials last July and seventh in the 2001 World Championships in Iran. Zadick is originally from Great Falls MT and now lives and trains in Iowa City, IA. Murad Gaidarov, who placed second in the 2002 Europeans and third in the 2000 Jr. Worlds, will compete for Belarus at 163 pounds. He will face two-time NCAA champion Donny Pritzlaff. Pritzlaff, who attended the University of Wisconsin, finished third at 163 pounds at the 2002 US World Team Trials in St. Paul, MN and is also the defending Dave Schultz International champ at that weight. Following at 185 pounds will be Siachei Borchanka. For Team USA it will be Charles Burton, who placed fifth in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Burton finished third at last year's Dave Schultz and fourth at the US Nationals. In 2001, Burton was champion of the Kiev Grand Prix and finished third at the World Cup. He was an All-American at Boise State University, finishing third at the NCAA tournament in 1996. Burton hails from Meridian, ID and is currently an assistant coach at Nebraska. Morrison will meet World Championship, Olympic and European place-winner Alexander Shemarov of Belarus at 211.5 pounds. Boris Grinkevich will compete for the visitors at heavyweight. He placed fourth at last year's World Championships, ninth at the 2002 Europeans and fifth at the 2000 Jr. Worlds. His opponent will be 1995 NCAA and US Nationals Champion Tolly Thompson. Thompson won the 2002 Dave Schultz International, Sunkist Open, NYAC Open and Pan Am titles. He finished second at both the 2001 and 2002 Nationals and placed third at the World Team Trials in 2001. He is a native of Janesville, IA, and was a three-time NCAA All-American for Nebraska and is currently serves as an assistant coach at Northern Iowa. Come early A wrestling clinic featuring US team coaches and athletes will precede each event, beginning at 5:30. Admission to the clinic is free with a paid ticket to the dual and is open to both athletes and coaches. Tickets for the event will be $10 and will be available only at the door.
