Rulon Gardner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) led U.S. Team #1 to a 15-11 win over Uzbekistan with a pin at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. The dual meet was tied at 11-11 heading into the final match. In his second match since returning from a snowmobiling accident last year, Gardner dominated Shermakhamad Kuziev of Uzbekistan, scoring two exposure points early in the match and three more later in the first period with a body lock throw. Kuziev awed the crowd some with a body lock throw of Gardner near the edge of the mat, but he could not get Gardner to expose his back and was only awarded one point for appreciation. With 10 seconds remaining in the first period, Gardner used a gut wrench to tilt Kuziev onto his shoulders, earning the pin nine seconds later. "I felt good and I felt pretty quick," Gardner said after his win. "I wanted to be selective in what I did and I wanted to work inside control. I didn't get a chance to use my off-balance moves, but I think I challenged him. I just wanted to take a 7-1 lead into the second period and get a technical fall, but the official called the touch fall." Gardner added that he was nervous when Kuziev locked him up, thinking he may expose his back. "I thought he was going to get three points out of me there. I just continued to fight for position and keep my balance. Luckily I was able to come out only giving up one point," the 2000 Olympic champion and 2001 World champion said. The U.S. team also received wins from Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. Bracken defeated Asliddin Khudayberdiev 6-2 and Dantzler defeated Ruslan Biktyakov, who placed 10th at the 2000 Olympic Games, 4-1. In the first period, Dantzler was able to use a gut wrench to score two exposure points and was awarded another point for appreciation after a gut lift. After Uzbekistan forfeited at 55 kg/121 lbs., 2001 World Champion Dilshod Aripov of Uzbekistan was able to score two late exposure points to seal a 5-1 win against Joe Warren (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. Uzbekistan also received wins from Djakongir Turdiev at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Evgeniy Erofailov at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. U.S. Team #2 started its dual meet with Japan with an 8-0 advantage, due to forfeits at 84 kg/185 lbs. and 120 kg/264.5 lbs., on its way to an 18-9 win. Even with the two empty weight classes, the Japan squad wrestled hard, winning the first two matches of the dual meet by technical fall and pin. Masatoshi Toyota dominated Neal Rodak (San Diego, Calif./U.S. Navy) at 55 kg/121 lbs. in just under a minute to earn a quick 10-0 technical fall. Toyoto dominated from par terre, dismantling Rodak. At 60 kg/132 lbs., Makato Sasamoto pinned Glenn Nieradka (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) with three seconds remaining in the match. The U.S. squad did not lose another match after that. 2001 U.S. World Team member Marcel Cooper (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) put his team on the scoreboard with a 3-2 overtime win over Masaki Imuro at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Imuro broke his lock in the clinch as he attempted to throw Cooper. 2001 U.S. World Team member Keith Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) sealed the win for the U.S. with a 10-0 technical fall over Katsuhiko Nagata, a 2000 Olympic silver medalist. Sieracki took care of Nagata quickly, scoring four points on gut wrenches and six points on lifts as the match was terminated before the one minute mark. Jason Loukides (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) recorded a win at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. to finish off the Japanese team. Action at the Concord Cup will resume at 2:00 p.m. with U.S. Team #3 taking on Uzbekistan. For complete coverage, log on to TheMat.com.
