Univ. of Minnesota wrestling team signs eight recruits

The University of Minnesota wrestling team announced the signing of eight top recruits to join the Golden Gophers in the 2001-02 wrestling season. Marcus LeVesseur, Matt Nagel, Jamell Tidwell, Tommy Owen, Cory Cooperman, Jesse Jensen, Ryan Flaherty and Kelly Flaherty have all signed national letters of intent.    LeVesseur joins the Golden Gophers as a three-time state wrestling champion at Minneapolis Roosevelt who is now a senior at Bloomington Kennedy. A highly-touted recruit, LeVesseur chose Minnesota over Big 12-power Iowa State. He is listed as the second-best recruit in Intermat1s 2000 top 200 recruits rankings. LeVesseur is projected to wrestle next season in the 149-pound weight class.    Frazee, Minn., native Matt Nagel, another highly-regarded recruit, will also join Minnesota in 2001-02. Nagel, ranked as the fourth-best recruit by Intermat, is a four-time Minnesota State High School champion at Frazee High School. A two-time Junior National Greco-Roman champ, Nagel was named to the High School All-American Second Team in 2000. He is projected to wrestle at 157 pounds next season.    Tidwell, of Bloomington Kennedy High School in Bloomington, Minn., was the 2000 130-pound Minnesota State High School champion. Rated as a top-100 recruit by Intermat, Tidwell is projected to wrestle at 141 pounds for the Maroon and Gold.    Owen, a native of Spokane, Wash., is a two-time Washington State High School Champion at 125 pounds at University High School. He is rated as a top 50 recruit for 2000 by Intermat. Owen will wrestle at 141 pounds for Minnesota.    Cory Cooperman, of Blair Academy in New Jersey, will also wear Maroon and Gold in 2001-02. Rated as the 17th-best recruit in the nation by Intermat, Cooperman is a National Prep champ, a Junior National Freestyle runner-up and a two-time High School All-American. He is projected to wrestle at 125 pounds next season.    Brooklyn Center, Minn., native Jesse Jensen joins Minnesota as a 2000 Minnesota State High School runner-up. He is projected to wrestle at 125 pounds for the Golden Gophers.    Twins Kelly and Ryan Flaherty of Big Lake, Minn., also have signed with Minnesota for the 2001-02 season. Both were Minnesota State High School placewinners in 2000. Kelly, projected to wrestle at 174 pounds, is rated in the top 200 by Intermat. Ryan will wrestle at 184 pounds for the Maroon and Gold. Kelly and Ryan are the younger brothers of current Golden Gopher Casey Flaherty.
