Three U.S. teams set for Concord Cup in Concord, Calif., Jan. 31-Feb. 2

Three U.S. teams are set to compete in the Concord Cup in Concord, Calif., Jan. 31-Feb. 2.    The Concord Cup pits three U.S. teams of the top Greco-Roman wrestlers in the nation against some of the top Greco-Roman wrestlers internationally. So far, international teams from Cuba, Japan and Uzbekistan have committed to competing in the event.    The first team is made up of wrestlers sponsored by the New York Athletic Club. Joining that team will also be 2000 Olympic Champion and 2001 World Champion Rulon Gardner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Gardner will continue his remarkable comeback after losing one toe due to a frostbite injury suffered last winter in the Wyoming wilderness.    Gardner will be joined by 2002 U.S. World Team members Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 66 kg/145. 5 lbs. and T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. Bracken has competed in the last two World Championships, placing seventh in 2001, and the 2000 Olympic Games, placing sixth. Dantzler competed in his first World Championships last summer, winning his pool but losing a qualification match.    Also competing for U.S. Team 1 will be 2002 U.S. World Team Trials runner-up Lindsay Durlacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and 2002 U.S. Nationals champion Ethan Bosch (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. The team will be coached by Momir Petkovic of Colorado Springs, Colo., Chris Saba of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Shawn Sheldon of Colorado Springs, Colo.    2002 World Champion Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) will lead U.S. Team 2 at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. U.S. Team 2 will be made up of athletes competing for the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army. Byers will be joined by 2002 U.S. World Team members Marcel Cooper (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Keith Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 74 kg/163 lbs. Cooper won a silver medal at the 2001 CISM World Military Championships. Sieracki won a silver medal at this year's CISM World Military Championships.    Joining those three will be Armed Forces stars Duaine Martin (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Glenn Nieradka (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 60 kg/132 lbs., Kenny Owens (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Dan Hicks (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.      Martin is a two-time Armed Forces champion and captured a gold medal at the 2002 CISM World Military Championships. Nieradka is a three-time Armed Forces champion, Owens is a five-time Armed Forces champion and Hicks has captured four Armed Forces championships.    U.S. Team 2 will be coached by Jay Antonelli of Quantico, Va. and Shon Lewis of Colorado Springs, Colo.    U.S. Team 3 will be led by 2002 U.S. World Team members Brandon Paulson (Anoka, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 55 kg/121 lbs., James Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Brad Vering (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 84 kg/185 lbs.    Paulson placed eighth at this year's World Championships and was a 1996 Olympic silver medalist. Gruenwald placed at the 2002 World Championships and Vering placed fifth.    Also competing for U.S. Team 3 are 2002 U.S. World Team Trials runners-up Darryl Christian (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Corey Farkas (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Farkas also won a silver medal at the 2002 CISM World Military Championships.    U.S. Team 3 will be coached by Ike Anderson of Colorado Springs, Colo., Rich Estrella of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Steve Fraser of Colorado Springs, Colo.    Weigh-ins will take place on Friday, Jan. 31 along with a fundraising dinner and an exhibition for select wrestlers. The dual competition between the U.S. and foreign teams will begin on Saturday, Feb. 1 and commence on Sunday, Feb. 2.
