DALLAS - University of Oklahoma freshman Teyon Ware was named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for his performances during the week of Jan. 13-19, the conference announced Monday. The Edmond, Okla., native had an outstanding weekend at the Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals in Columbus, Ohio. Ware, who was ranked 16th nationally in the 141-pound division heading into the meet, recorded upset wins in three of the four matches he competed in last weekend. The most impressive victory came against top-ranked and defending national champion Aaron Holker of Iowa State. Ware won by decision 3-1 in the stunning defeat. In addition to defeating Holker last Saturday, he knocked off No. 12 Shane Cunanan of West Virginia 7-4, pinned Iowa's Luke Moffitt by fall in six minutes and 48 seconds, and defeated No. 2 Zack Esposito of Oklahoma State 5-5 in double overtime. Ware has compiled a 10-1 overall and dual record and is 1-0 in the Big 12. His team (9-4), who was unseeded at the Duals, posted a runner-up finish and a 3-1 record. OU defeated the No. 6 seed West Virginia (20-18), Iowa State (19-15), and the No. 2 seed Iowa on near fall criteria (18-18) before falling to in-state and league rival top-seeded Oklahoma State (27-6) in the finals. Ware and the Sooners return to action when they host Oregon State and Oregon Friday. Oklahoma will wrestle Oregon State at Harrah (Okla.)
