Co-Wrestlers of The Week Jason Mester - Central Michigan Junior - 141 Pounds - Mineral Point, WI Mester went 2-0 at the National Duals with both victories coming over ranked opponents. This first victory was over 11th-ranked Luke Moffitt of Iowa by a major decision, 11-1. His second victory was over Gabe Vigil of Boise State, ranked fifth in the nation, by the score of 8-2. Nick Nemeth - Kent State Senior - 165 Pounds - Cleveland, OH Nemeth turned a defensive maneuver into four quick points in the final bout at 165 pounds to lead the 23rd-ranked Kent State University wrestling team to an 18-14 upset of 15th-ranked Northern Illinois University Jan. 19 and, in the process, set the school record for career victories by an individual. Other Nominees Jake Percival (Ohio, 149 lbs.) won both of his matches by 9-0 major decision this past weekend at the NWCA National Duals at Ohio State. Against the host and fifth-ranked Buckeyes, the All-American won the only bout for the Bobcats against Josh Daugherty. Later in the day, he would defeat Dustin Manotti of Cornell in a battle of fourth- and fifth-ranked 149-pounders. Garrett Bontempo, (Buffalo, 184 lbs.) to 25-5 on the season with a dominant performance at the New York State Collegiate Championships. Bontempo claimed the 184-pound championship with a fall in his first match and scores of 20-7, 15-5 and 12-4, respectively. Scott Owen (Northern Illinois, 157 lbs.) won a pair of matches, scoring a 19-4 technical fall against Northwestern's Paul Augle before posting a 17-8 major decision against 20th-ranked Mike Tolar of Kent State. The pair of victories ran his winning streak to ten matches. His win over Augle from Northwestern was his ninth-straight victory by pin or tech fall. Tolar was the first wrestler this season not to lose by pin or tech fall. Chad Roush (Eastern Michigan, 157 lbs.) went 3-1 for the week helping EMU improve to 5-6 on the year. At Indiana, Roush went 3-0 with victories over Alex Carter (SIUE) by a score of 2-0, pinning Shane Cristelli (MV) at 5:58, and pinning J.P. Stanley (IU) at 2:05. At home, Roush lost to nationally ranked Mike Tolar (KSU) 10-7 Notes From The Mat Buffalo Senior Gary Cooper became Buffalo's career victories leader by claiming the 174-pound title. Cooper now has a career mark of 104-41, passing Josh States' 102 career victories sent from 1997-2001. Cooper has won 15 straight matches. Kent State senior Nick Nemeth (165 lbs.) captured the 111th victory of his career, breaking the 22-year-old record held by former KSU All-American and longtime Ravenna High School head coach Steve Reedy (1977-81) with half his senior season remaining. Ohio Junior Paul Hodermarsky became the eighth Ohio wrestler this season to reach double figures in wins. Hodermarsky improved to 10-9 with a 3-2 victory over fellow junior Justin Lijo (Cornell) at the NWCA National Duals on Saturday. It marked the fourth consecutive win for the 133- and 141-pounder and the sixth in eight outings. He has also now recorded three straight wins by one-point decision. Northern Illinois returns home to the Convocation Center for the first time since November. NIU's last home meet was a 26-12 loss to then 24th-ranked Minnesota.
