Derek Phillips (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) and Jacob Schlottke (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley HS) have been accepted to the University of Minnesota and are expected to join the Golden Gopher wrestling team at the beginning of the second semester, which begins next Tuesday. Phillips is a fifth-year senior with one semester of eligibility remaining while Schlottke, a true freshman, will take part in an appeal process to gain eligibility for the 2002-03 season. Phillips is transferring to Minnesota from Central Michigan University where he was battling for the starting 141-pound position. Phillips took fifth place at the 2002 Midlands Championships, defeating top-ranked and defending NCAA Champion Aaron Holker of Iowa State, 10-6, in the third round of the tournament. Phillips compiled a 23-7 overall record during the 2001-02 season at CMU. He is expected to compete for the starting role at 141 pounds for the Golden Gophers. Currently, junior Trent Hatlevig and redshirt freshman Tommy Owen are sharing time in the starting lineup. Schlottke, a two-time Minnesota state champion at Apple Valley High School, is coming to Minnesota after being granted a release from his athletic scholarship at Arizona State University. A top recruit for the 2002-03 season, Schlottke finished second at the 2002 Senior Nationals, losing to Zack Esposito, now of Oklahoma State, in the championship bout. Expected to compete any where from 141 to 165 pounds, Schlottke holds a Minnesota state wrestling record for wins in a season with his 48-0 mark in the 2001-02 campaign. These additions to the Golden Gopher roster will not have an effect on Minnesota¹s lineups at this weekend¹s 2003 Cliff Keen/NWCA National Dual Meet Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
