The 2003 U.S. Women's Freestyle Winter Tour will begin on Jan. 18 with the Schaub International Tournament in Tourcoing, France and commence with the Klippan Lady's Open in Klippan, Sweden on March 9. 2002 World bronze medalist Kristie Marano (Albany, N.Y./ATWA) will compete at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. to lead the U.S. squad at the Shaub International Tournament. Also competing in the event are 2002 U.S. Women's World Team members Patricia Miranda (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Stephanie Murata (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Toccara Montgomery (Cleveland, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. The team will be coached by Troy Steiner of Madison, Wis. and Mike Marr. Miranda will also compete at the Ivan Yarygin Memorial International in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, Feb. 1-2. She will be joined by 2002 World silver medalist Tina George (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 55 kg/121 lbs. 2002 U.S. Women's World Team member Sara McMann (Lock Haven, Pa./Sunkist Kids) will compete at 63 kg/138.5 lbs. Joining them will be 2002 U.S. Women's World Team Trials champion Jenny Wong (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 51 kg/112 lbs. The team will be coached by Rusty Davidson of Albuquerque, N.M. Last year, McMann placed second at 63 kg/138.5 lbs. and Katie Downing (Lock Haven, Pa./Gator WC) placed third at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. at the Ivan Yarygin Memorial International. Wong did not place in the tournament last year. The Kiev Grand Prix will be held Feb. 21-22 in Kiev, Ukraine. Miranda and Murata will be joined 2002 U.S. Women's National Team members Tori Adams (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 63 kg/138.5 lbs., Mollie Keith (Aurelia, Iowa/Missouri Valley) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. and Satrinina Vernon (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. This squad will be coached by Afsoon Johnston of San Diego, Calif. and USA Wrestling National Women's Coach Terry Steiner of Colorado Springs, Colo. The 2003 Winter Tour will wrap up at the Klippan Lady's Open in Klippan, Sweden, March 8-9. The U.S. plans to have 18 women competing during this event, including Miranda, Wong, George, Murata, 2002 U.S. Women's World Team member Lauren Lamb (Farmington, N.Y./Michigan WC) at 59 kg/130 lbs., McMann, Downing and Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. This squad will be coached by Joe Corso of Des Moines, Iowa and Terry Steiner. Ingrid Medrano of Venezuela will join the U.S. squad at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. at the Klippan Lady's Open. At last year's Klippan Lady's Open, McMann captured a gold medal at 63 kg/138.5 lbs. and Murata won a silver medal at 51 kg/112 lbs. The U.S. did not send a women's team to the Shaub International Tournament and Kiev Grand Prix last year. "The 2003 Winter Tour is vital to the development of our U.S. women's teams as we head into the final two years before the 2004 Olympic Games," stated Terry Steiner. "These four events all have good international competition. It is experience that you cannot get in the practice room, but it is also a gauge to see where we are at, what we have learned and what we still need to work on." Some athletes attending the 2003 U.S. Men's Freestyle Winter Tour are financially supported by the sponsoring club team.
