Thunder Bay, Ontario - Three University of Minnesota-Morris freshman women wrestlers sacrificed two weeks of their Christmas break to resume training and competition to place at the Gord Garvie Memorial Wrestling Festival at Lakehead University on Saturday, January 4th.    Megan Goldsmith (Black River Falls, WI) won the silver medal at 70 kilos (152 pounds). Goldsmith wrestled to a 3-1 record in the tournament.    Goldsmith won her opening round match versus Elysia Gignac by fall in 4:30. In the quarterfinals, Goldsmith won a 10-0 technical superiority over Emily McGague, then downed Crissa Holginity of the University of Regina by fall in 5:40 in the semifinals.    In the finals Goldsmith lost to World Cup champion and UMM alumnus Katie Downing of the Sunkist Kids. Downing won the gold medal for the third straight year with a first period fall versus Goldsmith.    Tabithia Ramsey (Austin, TX) placed third at 48 kilos (106 pounds). Ramsey wrestled to a strong 3-1 record on the day. Ramsey lost her opening match to the eventual champion Audrey Carrasco of the University of Manitoba 6-0. In the consolation bracket Ramsey defeated Kelly Robinson by fall in 1:15, then downed Lisa Lamour by fall in 1:50. In the consolation finals, Ramsey defeated Cynthia Stacey with a fall in 2:25 to capture the bronze medal.    Ranae Faaborg (Radcliffe, IA) enjoyed her best outing of the season placing fifth at 63 kilos (138 pounds). Faaborg lost her opening round match to Chantel Radbourne of the University of Regina 10-0. In the consolation bracket, Faaborg bounced back to defeat Marion Marks of the University of Manitoba. Trailing 8-1 in the first period, Faaborg hit a picture perfect "lateral" throw to earn the fall and the victory at 4:30. Faaborg then dropped a 10-0 decision to Ellen Macro of McMaster, then won by injury default over Amanda Gerhardt to place fifth in the tournament.    All three UMM women produced their best showing of the season. "They earned those results," said UMM head coach Doug Reese. "When you sacrifice, train hard and give up vacation time at home, you expect results. These athletes have character and desire unlike most. They will have outstanding careers here," said Reese.    The Cougars will resume training with two-a-day practices until school starts up again on the 13th. The next competition for the UMM women will be a major international competition, the FILA - Manitoba Open held at the University of Manitoba. Expected to compete are the national teams of the United States, Japan, France, Austria, Sweden, and Mexico.
