CORVALLIS, Ore. There was one surprise Saturday when Oregon State finalized its wrestling lineup during the Beavers' annual Intrasquad Meet at Gill Coliseum. In the best-of-three competition for starting spots, freshman JedPennell moved into the top spot at 165 pounds by beating returning starter Jake Huffman. The Beavers, rated 19th nationally in InterMat's preseason rankings, put five nationally-ranked wrestlers on the mat Saturday and all five held their places in the OSU lineup - 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen, heavyweight Jason Cooley, 125-pounder Nathan Navarro, 174-pounder Nathan Coy and 133-pounder Ben Richards. Next Saturday, OSU will send most of its starting lineup to the Omaha Open in Omaha, Neb., while the rest of the Beavers go to the Southern Oregon Open in Ashland. Jorgensen, a senior, is ranked 12th nationally by Amateur Wrestling News and ninth by InterMat. He defeated freshman Ryan LaDouceur by pin and by technical fall. Last season, Jorgensen was 29-6 with five pins. Cooley, a junior, is ranked eighth by AWN and ninth by IM. He beat sophomore Andy Bowlby by scores of 4-3 and 3-2. Last season, Cooley won the Pacific-10 championship and finished the season 25-8 with two pins, while Bowlby won the Greco-Roman title at last spring's Junior National Championships and placed seventh in the Junior World Championships.. Navarro, a junior, is ranked eighth by AWN and ninth by IM. He beat sophomore Michael Delaney 6-2 and 6-1 on Saturday. Last season, Navarro went 22-14 with two pins and was just one win away from All-America status. Coy, a junior, is ranked 13th by AWN and 14th by IM. He defeated freshman Rylan Lizares by pin and technical fall. Last season, Coy went 21-13 and placed second in the Pacific-10. Richards, a senior, is ranked 18th by AWN. He topped freshman Tim Norman 8-4 and 9-2. Last season, Richards battled through back spasms to post a 17-13 record with three pins and made his third straight trip to the NCAA Championships. Other returning starters who held onto their spots for the Beavers were 141-pounder Shane Cunanan, 184-pounder Isaac Weber and 197-pounder Jason Lovell. At 149 pounds which had been wide-open going into the Intrasquad Meet, senior Paul Barron earned the nod. Oregon State begins its dual meet season at home against Stanford on Nov. 25 at 1 p.m.
