The Winter Classic, a major kids wrestling competition in Danville, Ill. on November 22-23, kicked off the new USA Wrestling Ultimate Challenge Series of Folkstyle Wrestling. Participants in the event scored points toward the series, with the champions taking the early lead in the national youth wrestling program. The Winter Classic was a new competition, organized by wrestling leaders in Illinois to be included in this exciting new series. The five-event series will also include three national recognized folkstyle events and USA Wrestling's prestigious Kids Folkstyle National Championships. The Winter Classic featured top wrestlers from across the nation, with individual champions representing 10 different states (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Georgia, Alabama, Wisconsin, Ohio, Iowa and Pennsylvania). The second leg of this exciting new series will be held this weekend, as the 18th Annual Cotton Bowl Classic in Mesquite, Texas, is being held December 27-28. The three divisions that can earn points are Division I (9/10 year olds), Division II (11/12 year olds) and Division III (13-15 year olds.) For the 2003 Series, age will be determined by the age the athlete was on September 1, 2002, and no athlete may turn 16 years old in 2003 and remain eligible. It should be noted that all the events in the Series include other age-group categories, but only these three age-group Divisions will score points towards the Dominator Awards. In addition to the three award winners per Division, the athlete scoring the most Dominator points will be recognized as "Ultimate Dominator" and receive a special award.
