December isn't just for bowl games anymore in the state of Texas. As football season winds down, wrestling season is gearing up. December 27th and 28th the Mesquite Rodeo Arena just outside of Dallas will host the biggest tournament in the state of Texas. The Cotton Bowl Classic competition has already turned heads as a new respect for wrestling in the state of Texas is earned. Kids from across Texas will encounter some of the best wrestlers from across the nation at this tournament. Wrestlers from the southeast in states like Georgia and Florida will tangle with wrestlers from the southwest of states like Arizona and New Mexico. Throw in a healthy contingent of Midwestern wrestlers from Ohio, Wisconsin, Missouri, Iowa, and Kansas, and the great action will show why this tournament was named a part of the Ultimate Challenge Series for USA Wrestling. Wrestlers will battle on fourteen full sized mats as they earn points in their quest to win the Dominator award for their age division. The Cotton Bowl Classic will have a large network of volunteers to assure the competition runs smoothly. One of the key organizing groups is the Team Monday wrestling club coached by Olympic Champion Kenny Monday, now a resident of Texas. Added to this year's tournament was a high school division for both boys and girls. Al Rodger, state chair of USA Wrestling in Texas, noted that "eventually this will be one of the premiere high school events in the country." The tournament has a long history of success and now the event is fully in the spotlight as one leg in the Ultimate Challenge Series. Coaches and wrestlers are encouraged to visit www.cottonbowlclassic.org for more information on this exciting weekend of wrestling. A Bronze Clinic will be offered prior to the start of the tournament. Please visit the Coaches Corner for more information on the clinic start time.
