The 2002 New York Athletic Club Christmas Championships are slated to be held Dec. 21-22 in New York City, N.Y. The three international styles, men's freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's freestyle, will all be included in the event, with many of the top wrestlers in the world expected to compete. This will be the third year that all three styles of wrestling will be held at the same time during the tournament. Unlike most international tournaments, the New York Athletic Club Christmas Championships uses a double-elimination pool system of pairing. Two of the 2002 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team members are expected to compete: Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Brad Vering (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 84 kg/185 lbs. Greco-Roman resident athletes expected to wrestle in the tournament include Lindsay Durlacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Joe Warren (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs., Mike Ellsworth (Colorado Springs, Colo./Michigan WC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Keith Wilson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Steve Woods (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Brandon McNab (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 74 kg/163 lbs., Cory Posey (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 74 kg/163 lbs., Ethan Bosch (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs., Aaron Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Matt Lamb (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Ellsworth and Bosch both captured individual titles last year at the NYAC Christmas Championships. Ellsworth defeated Oscar Wood (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) in the finals 3-1 and Bosch defeated James Meyer (Unattached) in the finals. Bracken, McNab and Lamb placed second in the tournament. In men's freestyle, 2002 World Team member Chris Bono (Gilbert, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) is expected to compete at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. He won this tournament last year by defeating Casey Cunningham (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Sunkist Kids) 6-0 in the finals. Also expected to compete in men's freestyle competition are U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athletes Jeff Prescott (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 55 kg/121 lbs., C.C. Fisher (Colorado Springs, Colo./Team Excel) at 60 kg/132 lbs., Jack Jensen (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 84 kg/185 lbs., Dean Morrison (Ithaca, N.Y./New York AC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs., Ryan Tobin (Marina del Rey, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. and Brian Keck (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Last year's men's freestyle champions included Donny Pritzlaff (Madison, Wis./Dave Schultz WC), Aaron Simpson (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunkist Kids), 2002 World Team member Tim Hartung (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) and Tolly Thompson (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Sunkist Kids). Women freestyle athletes expected to compete include 2002 World bronze medalist Kristie Marano (Albany, N.Y./ATWA) at 63 kg/138.5 lbs. and 2002 World Team members Patricia Miranda (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and Toccara Montgomery (Cleveland, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. Also expected to wrestle are U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athletes Katie Kunimoto (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pacific) at 51 kg/112 lbs., Erin Tomeo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 59 kg/130 lbs., Tori Adams (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 63 kg/138.5 lbs., Sally Roberts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pacific) at 63 kg/138.5 lbs. and Kaci Lyle (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pacific) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. Last year, Canada controlled the women's competition as Lindsey Rushton and Tanya Verbeek won individual titles. Rushton won at 112.25 lbs. and Verbeek won two weight classes: 123.25 lbs. and 136.5 lbs. Rachel Bernardes (Missouri Valley College) won the 101.25-pound title. Wrestling will begin at 1:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) on Saturday, Dec. 21 and go until the semifinals. On Sunday, Dec. 22, wrestling will begin again at 10:00 a.m. (Eastern Time) and go through the finals and placing matches.
