2000 Olympic champion Rulon Gardner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) will appear on the Monday, Dec. 16 episode of "The Best Damn Sports Show Period" on Fox Sports Net. The show will air at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) or immediately following your local game broadcast. Gardner will appear as part of an Olympics tribute segment on the show. Also appearing in the segment will be marathon runner Bruce Jenner, diver Greg Louganis, gymnast Bart Connor, gymnast Nadia Comaneci, gymnast Mitch Gaylord, swimmer Lenny Krayzelburg, gymnast Kerri Strug, swimmer Janet Evans, track & field star Evelyn Ashford, track & field star Edwin Moses and commentator Jim Lampley. Gardner won the 2000 Olympic gold medal at 286 lbs. in Greco-Roman wrestling after defeating Alexander Karelin of Russia in the finals. Karelin had previously gone unbeaten in 13 years of international competition prior to the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Gardner followed that win by capturing the 2001 World Championship at the same weight. On Feb. 14, 2002, Gardner had been snowmobiling with three friends when he became bogged down in deep snow in the Bridger-Teton National Forest near his hometown of Afton, Wyo. Gardner braved overnight temperatures minus 10 degrees for nearly 14 hours before being rescued the next morning. He lost a toe to frostbite during a recovery process. Gardner has since returned to the mat and has begun training for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. In November, he defeated Eddy Bengtsson of Sweden at the Kurt Angle Classic in New Orleans, La. in his first match since the snowmobile accident.
