LANCASTER, PA - In honor of reaching the one million dollar mark for the W. Roy Phillips Wrestling Endowment campaign, Franklin and Marshall College will host a recognition dinner following a triangular meet against Rutgers and Wagner on January 18, 2003. The evening's ceremonies will honor W. Roy Phillips' contribution to the sport of Wrestling and celebrate his continued legacy by honoring the donors who have contributed over one million dollars to ensure the sport of wrestling at F & M will endure for many future generations. Stan Zeamer, former Head Coach of F & M and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame will serve as guest speaker. Following the evening's events, a donor plaque will be placed in the Steinman Center. Ted Rupp, PhD., Chairman of the endowment fundraising committee, was instrumental in the success of this initiative. When F & M built a state-of-the-art Sports and Fitness Center six years ago, many coaches were honored. Ted Rupp wanted to make sure the sport of wrestling was not forgotten. He formed a committee to determine the best way to honor Coach W. Roy Phillips. Roy Phillips, one of the greatest wrestlers ever to compete for Franklin & Marshall College, was also a superb coach and teacher. His dual meet record at F&M was 34-2, and, in 33 of those victories, Roy pinned his opponent. In 1933, his junior year, he was NCAA runner-up in the 135 pound class. As a senior, he was undefeated, and served as captain of the 1933-34 F&M squad, which also had a perfect record. After a very successful nine-year coaching career at Upper Merion High, Penn, and Valley Forge Military Academy, he returned to his alma mater to coach varsity wrestling from 1948-1967. While coaching at F&M, he compiled an outstanding 118-68-7 record, coached freshman wrestling for twelve years, and also served as athletic director from 1967-71.Coach Phillips, a recipient of many awards, was inducted into the Pennsylvania chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in April of 2002. Andy Noel, former F & M wrestler and current Athletic Director at Cornell University, introduced the idea of starting an endowment to keep the storied wrestling tradition at F & M alive. As many college wrestling programs have been dropped, he felt that there was no better way to honor Coach Phillips than by keeping the sport he loves alive.
