Durlacher, Hicks Capture Bronze Medals at the Vantaa Cup in Vantaa, Finland

Lindsay Durlacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./Wildcat WC) and Dan Hicks (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) both captured bronze medals at the 2002 Vantaa Cup help in Vantaa, Finland Dec. 7-8.    Durlacher was pinned in pool competition, but still had enough technical points to advance out of his pool at 55 kg/121 lbs. In the semifinals, he lost to eventual champion Dmitriy Yurkin of Russia by a 3-0 score. Durlacher came back to defeat Juri Koval of Ukraine in the bronze medal match.    Duaine Martin (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) also placed at 55 kg/121 lbs., finishing fifth. He lost to Yurkin 8-4 in the quarterfinals.    Hicks was dominant in pool competition, recording a pin and a technical fall in his two matches at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. In the semifinals, Hicks lost 3-0 to Martin Lidberg of Sweden, who went on to win the silver medal. Lidberg is a former World bronze medalist and European champion.    Philip Johnston (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) also placed at 96 kg/211.5 lbs., placing sixth. Johnston's lone loss came to Denis Shakaja, the eventual champion, in the quarterfinals.    At 74 kg/163 lbs.,  Steve Woods (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) placed fourth and  Darryl Christian (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) placed fifth. Woods had only surrendered two points in three matches leading up to his loss to Lappalainen.    Woods lost a tight 9-8 overtime decision to Juha Lappalainen of Finland in the semifinals to drop into the bronze medal match. He then lost to Tommy Lundell of Sweden 7-1.    Christian lost to silver medalist Tuomas Ojala of Finland 4-4 in overtime in the quarterfinals. In pool competition, Christian recorded a 5-0 decision and a 15-3 technical fall to advance to the quarterfinal round.    Aaron Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) also advanced to the semifinal round before dropping a 3-0 decision to Sergiy Rutenko of Ukraine. Rutenko went on to capture the silver medal. Sieracki forfeited the bronze medal match.    The United States placed fifth as a team with 14 points.
