Las Vegas, Nev. - Through the first night of competition at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., Ohio State has stormed in front of the competition to take the team lead with 86.5 points. The Buckeyes have been lead by semifinalists Jeff Ratliff at 141 lbs., Keaton Anderson at 157 lbs., John Clark at 165 lbs., Blake Kaplan at 174 lbs., Anton Talamantes at 197 lbs. and defending NCAA champion Tommy Rowlands at 285 lbs. Anderson defeated freshman phenom Alex Tirapelle of Illinois 12-7 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals, where he will now face Ryan Bertin of Michigan. Clark, the Big Ten runner-up last year has been impressive, winning by major decision, technical fall and pin on his way to a semifinal matchup with 2001 All-American Jacob Volkmann of Minnesota. Rowlands has recorded three pins in his first four matches. He will match up with Nebraska-Omaha Open runner-up Kellan Fluckiger of Arizona State in the semifinals. West Virginia is hot on the Buckeyes' tail with 81 points through Friday night's action. The Mountaineers will see semifinalists Brandon Lauer at 133 lbs., Shane Cunanan at 141 lbs., Billy Smith at 149 lbs., defending NCAA champion Greg Jones at 174 lbs. and heavyweight Brent Miller compete today. Minnesota only trails the Mountaineers by half a point in the team race. The Gophers and Mountaineers meet up in two semifinal matches. At 133 lbs., defending NCAA finalist Ryan Lewis will match up with Lauer and at 149 lbs., defending NCAA champion Jared Lawrence will face off with Smith. Jones will have a chance to get West Virginia in the team lead as he faces Ohio State's Blake Kaplan in a 174-pound semifinal. Here is a weight-by-weight recap of Friday's action: 125 The biggest surprise was the ease that Tony Black of Wisconsin downed All-American Ben VomBaur of Boise State in the quarterfinals. Black, who has always been known for his offensive prowess, dominated VomBaur 12-6 in advancing to the semifinals. Everything else went as expected, as three of the top four seeds are in the quarterfinals. All-American Chris Fleeger of Purdue will match up with 2001 All-American A.J. Grant of Michigan while Black will face All-American Jason Powell of Nebraska in the semifinals. 133 Another upset happened in this weight as Matt Sanchez of Cal State Bakersfield defeated Foley Dowd of Michigan 9-5 in the quarterfinals. Sanchez was a transfer from Iowa State last season and seems to finally be coming into his own. Sanchez will face Kevin Black, Tony's brother, of Wisconsin in the semifinals. In the other semifinal, NCAA finalist Ryan Lewis of Minnesota will meet up with Brandon Lauer of West Virginia. Lauer barely slid into this match after an exciting 12-10 win over Mark Jayne of Illinois. The Lewis-Lauer match will have major implications on the team race as well. 141 Shane Cunanan of West Virginia is the only top-four seed to make it into the semifinals. He escaped the quarterfinals with a 5-4 win over rejuvenated Clark Forward of Michigan. He will face Clint Frease of Brown in the semifinals. Frease has been impressive with wins over J.P. Reese of Missouri and Blake Gunter of Wyoming. Jeff Ratliff of Ohio State has also been dominant in this tournament, but his semifinal opponent Dana Holland of Arizona State, will be his first true test. Holland knocked off third-seeded Gabe Vigil of Boise State 3-2 in the quarterfinals to advance. 149 This has shaped up to be one of the deepest weight classes in the nation, and in this tournament. Defending NCAA champion Jared Lawrence of Minnesota leads the charge. Lawrence has recorded three pins so far and will be looking for another against Billy Smith of West Virginia in a semifinal match that will surely affect the team standings. In the other semifinal, All-Americans Jesse Jantzen of Harvard and Eric Larkin of Arizona State will meet up in one of the most-anticipated matches of this early season. Both survived tough quarterfinal matches, but this match could include a lot of offense. 157 The top four seeds, Luke Becker of Minnesota, Ryan Bertin of Michigan, Keaton Anderson of Ohio State and Adam Britt of VMI, all advanced to the semifinals at this weight. Becker, the defending NCAA champion, will be the obvious favorite to win his weight, but the matchup of Bertin and Anderson could be interesting. This is Anderson's first real test at 157 this year since moving up from 149 last year. 165 All top four seeds advance to the semifinals at this weight as well. Defending NCAA champion Matt Lackey of Illinois has been dominant so far, outscoring his first three opponents 32-4. Lackey has always been strong in this tournament and he will get a good match in the semifinals against the athletic Tyron Woodley of Missouri. These two have contrasting styles, but whoever is able to dominate from their feet should win. Minnesota's Jacob Volkmann, who was expected to be at 174 to start this season, will test his progress against Big Ten runner-up John Clark of Ohio State. These two will undoubtedly see each other a few more times this season. 174 Seeds two through four all lost in the quarterfinals, leaving defending NCAA champion Greg Jones of West Virginia as the only top-seeded wrestler in the semifinals. Jones has struggled in this tournament, winning on the flip of a coin in the quarterfinals against Curtis Owen of Arizona State and sliding by with an 8-6 win over Tom Meester of Augustana in the second round. Jones will now face Blake Kaplan of Ohio State, who upset Ryan Lange of Purdue in the quarterfinals. In the other semifinal, Brian Glynn of Illinois will face Josh McLay of Minnesota. 184 Top seed Jason Potter of Illinois advanced to the semifinals with a slim 5-4 win over Ryan Halsey of Cal Poly. He will match up with Ralph DeNisco of Wisconsin, who has recorded two pins and a technical fall so far in the tournament. In the other semifinal, Division II star Mauricio Wright of San Francisco State will face off against B.J. Padden of Nebraska, who has been impressive so far this entire season. Padden downed third-seeded Scott Justus of Virginia Tech in the third round by riding him out in the tiebreaker to stay in the championship bracket. 197 Emmett Willson of Montana State-Northern screwed up next week's rankings by taking out top seed Kyle Smith of Michigan 6-1. Willson is another in a long line of Northern wrestlers who can dominate Division I competition. He will face Anton Talamantes of Ohio State in the semifinals. Talamantes was the fifth seed coming into the tournament, but has now taken the role as the front runner at this weight class. In the other semifinal, Tyrone Byrd of Illinois will take on David Schenk of Cal Poly. All-American Justin Ruiz of Nebraska went down in his first match by injury default. Ruiz aggravated his hamstring and is expected to miss 4-8 weeks. All-American Scott Barker of Missouri, also expected to compete, was a late scratch due to injury. 285 Athletic heavyweights are in style as defending NCAA champion Tommy Rowlands moved into the semifinals easily after winning three of his matches by fall. Rowlands will now test his strength against Kellan Fluckiger of Arizona State, who has a pin and two technical falls so far in this tournament. Fluckiger is an offensive wrestler who has the build and stamina to be able to compete with Rowlands. All-American Kevin Hoy of Air Force will face off with Brent Miller of West Virginia in the other semifinal.
