TV Executive Roone Arledge, Wrestling Hall of Fame honoree, dies at age 71

Roone Arledge, the television executive that brought NFL Monday Night Football and Wide World of Sports to the nation, died on Thursday, December 5, at the age of 71.    Arledge, who has a wrestling background, was inducted as an Outstanding American in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1992. He was in the first class of former wrestlers honored for their achievements in society, a group that included business giant James M. Biggar, scientist Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, astronaut Michael Collins, actor Kirk Douglas, author John Irving, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, as well as U.S. Presidents Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.    Arledge, a Long Island native, was one of the giants in the television industry, making his mark with ABC Sports and ABC News. Known for his creative innovations, Arledge was a 36-time Emmy winner.
