Oklahoma State at Oklahoma
Dec. 8, 2002 Lloyd Noble Center Norman, Okla.
It is called Bedlam and it happens twice a year. In-state rivals Oklahoma State and Oklahoma lock horns in a battle for state supremacy. These are two of the most historic programs in college wrestling history. Oklahoma State has won more team titles (30) and individual NCAA titles (122) than any other program. Oklahoma is fourth in team titles (7) and third in individual titles (61). But, since the 1995-96 season, Oklahoma State has dominated this rivalry. The Cowboys have captured 13 wins in 15 meetings, with one loss and one tie mixed in as well. The Sooners are itching for a win. On a side note, Oklahoma coach Jack Spates suffered a mild heart attack on Monday evening. The coach who has brought Sooner wrestling back into the national title picture is recovering and hopes to be back on the mat later this season. Our thoughts and prayers go to coach Spates and his family. 125: Skyler Holman (Oklahoma State) vs. Bo Maynes (Oklahoma) After getting beat to start the season, Holman has rebounded and become dominant again. Of course, this most likely came because of a good ear-ringing from head coach John Smith. Holman is technically sound on his feet and has learned to become a very good rider. Maynes finally seems to be avoiding injury, though it is still early in the season. He is a gritty wrestler and has a lot of talent, but is yet to put that into use. This match will be closer than many people think, and Maynes winning is not a stretch of the imagination. Maynes will most likely try to slow the pace of this match down and keep the score low. Every now and then, Holman will take a bad shot, and Maynes needs to make sure and catch him every time he does it in this match. TheMat.com Prediction: Holman 133: Cody Stites (Oklahoma State) vs. Witt Durden (Oklahoma) Stites is a 125-pounder who is stepping in for the injured Johnny Thompson, who hurt his knee a couple of weeks ago. He is a tough competitor, but moving up a weight and competing against one of the top wrestlers in the nation will be a tough task to ask of Stites. Durden is the forgotten man at this weight class nationally. He has all of the tools to defeat the top wrestlers in the nation, but always seems to lose the one-point matches. With Thompson out of the lineup, the Sooners will be looking at major points in this match. Durden can be a bear from the top position, and he will look to get on top early and get some cheap tilts for back points. TheMat.com Prediction: Durden 141: Zack Esposito (Oklahoma State) vs. Nate Parker (Oklahoma) Esposito has burst onto the scene this year. This freshman phenom was supposed to redshirt, but then he wrestled a match and coaches knew they would be crazy to sit this kid out. He is lightning quick. His major flaw is that he sometimes rides a little high on top, and he can get himself caught in a bad position. Parker has started this season like he started last - slow. He was an All-American last season, but has shown no signs of the effort so far this year. He has solid technique and is very athletic, but for some reason he has been unable to put anything together so far this year. He will need to change that now for the Sooners to have a chance to win. Esposito struggles on his feet when he can't tie up, so Parker will want to stay out of this position. It may frustrate the freshman enough into taking a wild shot. This is where Parker needs to score. This could be an exciting match, with two great athletes on the mat, but experience is no factor in this one. TheMat.com Prediction: Esposito 149: Jerrod Sanders (Oklahoma State) vs. Beau De'Armon (Oklahoma) One thing is for sure about Sanders. He doesn't lose matches he is supposed to win. This being said, he is an obvious favorite to win this match. He is a wrestler who does not put much fear into his opponents, but he is consistent enough offensively to where they definitely take note of him. Sanders is wrestling in a match in which he could score some major points. De'Armon will step into the lineup after Matt Grice became injured. De'Armon can be solid, but lacks experience, which will hurt him in this match. De'Armon is still young and has a lot of learning to do. This match could be a big lesson for him. TheMat.com Prediction: Sanders 157: Shane Roller (Oklahoma State) vs. Raf Maturino (Oklahoma) Roller is one of the most talented wrestlers in the nation, but he seems to get himself into jams quite a bit. He gives up a lot of takedowns, but he shouldn't have much of a problem with that in this match. Maturino gives up a lot of points on his own. He has a tough time stopping solid offensive opponents, and this is one of them. If Maturino is not able to slow down the pace of this match, this is a prime candidate for major points for the Cowboys. Roller will look to score early and often. Although he is not a pinner, he has the ability to rack up points in a hurry. This would be a good match for him to get back on track. TheMat.com Prediction: Roller 165: Tyrone Lewis (Oklahoma State) vs. Wes Roberts (Oklahoma) Lewis is as good as they come at this weight class. Pound-for-pound, he may be the most athletic wrestler in the nation. He has blazing quickness and can finish his shots real well. Roberts is also a solid mix of strength and quickness, but his technique is lacking. Also, as only a sophomore, he has been hampered by numerous injuries. He will need to be 150% for this matchup. Lewis has a great ankle pick and an even better set up for it. Even if Roberts is looking for this, it will be tough to stop. He needs to either keep separation between him and Lewis to make Lewis reach for the ankles or he can tie up so tight that Lewis can set up his shot. Either way, he may face a couple of stalling calls. If Lewis wrestles to his capability, he could score major points for his team. TheMat.com Prediction: Lewis 174: Chris Pendleton (Oklahoma State) vs. Robbie Waller (Oklahoma) Pendleton returns after a redshirt year last season. He is quick, athletic and strong for this weight. Over the summer he was wrestling at 185 lbs. and was very competitive. This can only help him this season. Waller moved up in weight this season to help stay healthy for a full season, something he has yet to do going into his senior year. He likes to wrestle a funky style and is best in scramble situations, but last year, he began to gain more confidence from his feet. These two met two years ago at 165 lbs. Waller won both meetings, but only by a total of four points. A lot has changed since then for both wrestlers. Pendleton will want to avoid scramble situations by taking shots above Waller's knees. Waller, on the other hand, will want to try to get on top against Pendleton, which is his weakest position. If Waller can score some back points, this match will be over. TheMat.com Prediction: Waller 184: Jake Rosholt (Oklahoma State) vs. Josh Lambrecht (Oklahoma) Rosholt was one of the top recruits in the nation two years ago. He was impressive last year as a redshirt, but so far this year, seems to have taken steps backwards. Maybe the pressure of actually wearing the orange singlet has gotten to him some. Technically, he has made numerous mistakes this season and he has given up way too many takedowns. He will need to change that to have any chance in this match. Lambrecht has a long and lean body, which is great for scr
