EAST LANSING, Mich. - The 13th-ranked Central Michigan University wrestling team (1-0, 0-0 Mid-American) defeated the ninth-ranked Michigan State Spartans here Tuesday night. The dual was tied at 16 at the end, but because of a new NCAA rule which does not allow ties, CMU won on the eighth tiebreak criteria, which is the team with the most nearfall points. The Chippewas scored 10 nearfall points in the dual while the Spartans only scored three. The deciding match was at heavyweight where CMU's Bill Stouffer (Lowell/So.) defeated 15th-ranked John Wetcher, 6-4, to tie the dual at 16 and give CMU the victory. The first match of the night at 125 pounds pitted CMU's Kyle Stoffer (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Fr.) against 17th-ranked Nick Simmons. Simmons took control of the match early with a first period takedown and shutout Stoffer for the major decision, 8-0. At 133 pounds, 15th-ranked Ryan L'Amoreaux of MSU got a takedown with 15 second left in the first overtime to beat Jason Borrelli (Mount Pleasant/So.), 3-1. The Chippewas got on the board in the 141-pound match when sixth-ranked Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis/Jr.) of CMU got a decision over Darren McKnight, 10-3. The match at 149 pounds went the distance as ninth-ranked Ty Morgan (Huber Heights, Ohio/Jr.) of CMU beat 10th-ranked Karl Nadolsky in double-overtime, 2-1. Nadolsky won the coin-flip and chose bottom and Morgan was able to hold him down the entire 30 second overtime period. The match at 157 pounds belonged to MSU's Grey Maynard, ranked fifth in the country, as he edged out CMU's David Bolyard (Akron, Ohio/So.), 10-7. The Spartans held a 10-6 lead after the first five matches, but the Chippewas tied things up at 10 with Kevin Carr's (Warsaw, Ind./Jr.) major decision at 165 pounds. Carr dominated his match with MSU's Arsen Aleksanyan, winning, 14-2, and earning six critical nearfall points in the match. The match in the 174-pound weight class came down to riding time as 11th-ranked Rashad Evans of MSU got the one-point victory over Mitch Hancock (Royal Oak/So.), 4-3. The Chippewas tied the dual back up with a victory by Alex Lammers (Huber Heights, Ohio/So.) over Jeff Clemens, 3-1. Ninth-ranked Nik Fekete of Michigan State gave the lead back to the Spartans in the 197-pound match with by defeating Brett Faustman (Mason/Sr.), 10-4, to set the stage for Stouffer's win. The Chippewas return to action on Saturday, Dec. 14, when they host Cleveland State in CMU's first home dual on the season. The dual will take place in the Indoor Athletic Complex track bay at noon.
