Chael Sonnen (Eugene, Ore./Dave Schultz WC) won three matches in his pool and has advanced to the semifinals at 187.25 pounds at the 2000 World University Greco-Roman Championships, Monday, Nov. 6 in Tokyo, Japan. Sonnen opened with a tight 1-0 overtime referee's decision over Toomas Proovel of Estonia. His second match was an injury default over Jerry Van De Pol of Netherlands. He clinched the pool victory by beating Gregory Martinetti of Switzerland, 4-2. Sonnen owns a No. 3 national ranking in the United States and is a member of 2000-2001 Greco-Roman Team USA. He is a star athlete for the Univ. of Oregon. Two other wrestlers placed second in their pools, but have advanced to a repechage (wrestleback) in their weight classes: Darnell Lollis (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 127.75 pounds and Joe Warren (Colorado Springs, Colo./Michigan WC) at 138.75 pounds. If they win their repechage competition, they will also advance to the semifinals. Lollis opened with a 14-0 technical fall over Arash Rayhanaisl of Netherlands. In his second match, he lost to Makoto Sasamoto of Japan by technical fall, 14-4, and Sasamoto won the pool. Lollis will face Jo Kyu-Hyun of Korea and Jarkko Ala-Huikka of Finland in the repechage rounds on Tuesday. Lollis is a member of the 2000-2001 Greco-Roman National Team, holding down No. 3 national ranking. He is a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete. Warren also won his first match, defeating Rocco Spano of Italy, 8-1. In his second bout, he lost a tight 4-1 overtime decision to Song In-Ki of Korea, and Song advanced to the semifinals. Warren will face Ali Ashkam Agbolagh of Iran and Mitsuoki Hirai of Japan in the repechage rounds on Tuesday. Warren, a former star at the Univ. of Michigan, is now a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete. The other five members of the U.S. University Greco-Roman team also competed on Monday, and all suffered at least one loss. Athletes with 0-2 records in their pool competition are Nathan Piasecki (Marquette, Mich./USOEC) at 119 pounds, Joshua Hall (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 213.75 pounds and Josh Etu (Charlottesville, Va./ATWA) at 286 pounds. All three wrestlers have one more pool match on Tuesday. Athletes with 0-1 records in their pool competition are Cory Posey (E. Lansing, Mich./New York AC) at 152 pounds and Carl Fronhofer (Pittsburgh, Pa./PWC) at 167.5 pounds. Both wrestlers will also compete one more time in their pool competition on Tuesday. Hall is ranked No. 4 nationally on the Senior level at 213.75 pounds. Fronhofer and Etu were Olympic Trials qualifiers in 2000. Currently competing on the college level are Posey (Michigan State), Fronhofer (Pittsburgh) and Etu (Virginia). Piasecki attends the U.S. Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman program at the Univ. of Northern Michigan. The Greco-Roman athletes are coached by Greco-Roman Developmental Coach Ike Anderson and Greco-Roman Resident Coach Anatoly Petrosyan, who work full-time at USA Wrestling's national headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo. To participate, an athlete must be 17-28 years old, must be a current college student, or be graduated from a university within a year of the competition. The U.S. team was selected based upon performance on the national level, with National Team ranking, Olympic and Regional Trials and Resident athlete participation the top criteria. In addition, performance at USA Wrestling age-group national events was also part of the selection process.
