EDINBORO, PA   The Edinboro University wrestling team held its annual Wrestleoffs on Saturday, November 4 in McComb Fieldhouse.  The event pits Edinboro wrestling teammates against one another and is often used to finalize the team's starting lineup.  "Everybody wrestled hard today, and that's all I can ask for," said head coach Tim Flynn.  "We've been practicing very hard over the past couple weeks, and everybody showed it in their performances.  The favorites won as expected, but some of the guys showed they were closer than we thought.  We will be very deep this season."    With all incumbents securing their spots, the two spots in the starting lineup that were open to start the season were finalized at the event.      At 125 pounds, redshirt junior Charlie Soto (El Paso, TX/J.M. Hanks) held off freshman Jacob Gray (Essex, VT/Essex) to earn the starting nod in the weight class.  Soto won both matches against the newcomer, scoring 3-2 and 5-3 decisions.  Soto spent the 1999 season as a backup, posting a 10-7 record.        Highly touted recruit Justin Millard (Laceyville, PA/Wyalusing) earned his spot in the lineup at 184 lbs. with two victories over fellow freshman Matthew Camino (Solon, OH/Solon).  Millard, a PIAA state champion, won the first match by a 6-3 score.  In the rematch, he captured a 6-1 decision over Camino.    The middleweights, which are the deepest for coach Flynn, went according to form, but not without some very strong performances by the freshman.  Twin brothers Ryan and Shaun Shapert (Glenshaw, PA/Shaler) will start in the 149 and 157-pound weight classes, respectively.  Ryan, returning from a season-ending neck injury a year ago, defeated blue chip recruit David Patrick (Wyalusing, PA/Wyalusing) in the final match by a 7-4 score.  "Ryan saw that he still needs some more work to get where he was a year ago," thought Flynn.  "He needs to get in a little bit better shape, as do the rest of his teammates."       (Ryan) Shapert held off freshman Josh Yetzer (Mansfield, OH/Mansfield Madison) in the opening match, winning the 7-5 decision.  Yetzer advanced to meet Shapert with a 12-3 victory over Chris Bala (Darien, NY/Alexander Central).  Patrick battled Ohio state champion Nate Yetzer (Mansfield, OH/Mansfield Madison) in the first round, winning by an 8-4 count.  In the consolation bracket, Nate scored a victory over his brother Josh for third place.      At 157 pounds, (Shaun) Shapert defeated newcomers Ryan Yates (Lower Burrell, PA/Burrell), 6-0, and Josh Evans (Marietta, GA/McEachern), 13-2.  Shapert, a returning All-American, starts the season as the fifth-ranked wrestler in the weight class by InterMat Magazine, after a 23-9 record a year ago.  In the consolation match, Yates scored a 7-4 decision over Evans.    National qualifier Yanni Diamond (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) will again be the Edinboro starter at 165 pounds.  He bested Stan Greene (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) in his first round match by a 12-2 count, then defeated redshirt freshman Matthew King (Connellsville, PA/Connellsville), 5-2.  King advanced with a forfeit victory over injured Ben Boozer (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton).    National runner-up Josh Koscheck (Waynesburg, PA/Waynesburg) was uncontested at 174 lbs.      Like Koscheck, David Shunamon (Tewksbury, MA/Tewksbury) is the lone competitor in his weight class, 197 lbs.  Shunamon was red-shirted a year ago and replaces National qualifier A.J. Johnson.    Another of the injured Fighting Scots was heavyweight Josh Pearce (Greenville, PA/Commodore Perry).  While the junior, a National qualifier last year, will retain his starting role, on this day it was senior Kevin O'Meara (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) defeating freshman Reuben Daniels (Summerville, SC/ Summerville), with Daniels going on to defeat freshman Ryan Smith (McKean, PA/General McLane).  The Fighting Scot grapplers will debut on Sunday, October 12, participating in the Oklahoma Classic at Brockport, NY.
