Orange Team Defeats Blue Squad 22-12 in Virginia's Blue & Orange Exhibition

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. In preparation for the upcoming 2000-2001 wrestling season, the University of Virginia wrestling team competed in the Blue & Orange exhibition tonight at Memorial Gymnasium. The Blue & Orange exhibition is an intra-squad scrimmage between members of the UVa wrestling team. The Orange team recorded a 22-12 victory over the Blue squad by gathering victories in six of the nine matches. At 125, Brain Hutton (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) gave the Blue squad an early 3-0 lead after posting a 9-5 victory over Jeff Pradhan (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point). The Orange team won the next four matches beginning with a 7-4 victory by Toby MacDonald (Venice, Fla./Venice) over Joe Alexander (Franklin, N.J./Delsea Regional) at 133 lbs. Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) pulled out a 9-7 decision over Jamie Castleman (Ridgetop, Tenn./Father Ryan) at 141 lbs. before P.J. Bory (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) posted a 3-0 victory over Ernesto Vera (Chesapeake, Va./Lake Taylor) at 149 lbs. to give the Orange team a 9-3 lead. At 165 lbs. Greg Francesca (Union, N.J./Blair Academy) narrowly defeated Brain Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) by the score of 3-2 to push the Orange team's lead to 12-3. Kevin Collier (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) pulled the Blue squad within three points (12-9) of the Orange team after pinning Cartney Curnuck (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) at 1:20 into the match at 174 lbs. Jimi Massey (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) responded with a fall of his own for the Orange team at 184 lbs. after pinning Scott Mania (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) at 5:55 to extend his teams lead to 18-9. At 197, Zach Freday (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) outlasted Mark McLean (Plainfield, N.J./Blair Academy) 2-1 in overtime to pull the Blue squad within six points of the Orange team at 18-12. However, Ryan Painter (Rainelle, W.V./Rainelle) sealed the victory for the Orange team by recording a 12-3 major decision victory over Andy DeMartino (McLean, Va./Jefferson) in the heavyweight class, making the final score 22-12. There was not a match at in the 157 lbs. class due to an injury. Some of Virginia's top wrestlers did not compete in the Blue & Orange match on Sunday. Ryan McGrath (184) will red-shirt the 2000-2001 season and Josh Etu (HWT) is currently competing for the United States in the 2000 World University Greco-Roman Championships in Tokyo, Japan (November 2-8). Tim Foley (157) is battling an injury and was not able to compete for the Orange squad during the exhibition. The Cavaliers will open the regular season portion of their schedule when Virginia travels to Harrisonburg, Va. to face James Madison on Saturday, November 11th in a dual match.
