Marcel Cooper Captures Silver Medal at Yuri Lavrikov Memorial Tournament

St. Petersburg, Russia - Marcel Cooper (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) captured the silver medal at 74 kg/163 lbs. at the 2002 Yuri Lavrikov Memorial Tournament held in St. Petersburg, Russia. Cooper lost a 4-1 decision to Gusen Sharharov  of St. Petersburg, Russia in the gold medal finals.    Cooper defeated Pavel Federov of St. Petersburg, Russia 6-0 and Alexander Rublevskie of Belarus 3-0 in pool competition before knocking off Intigam Dshavadov of St. Petersburg, Russia in the semifinals.    Jake Clark (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) was the only other U.S. wrestler to make it out of pool competition. Clark defeated Magomed Shabonov of Ulensaok, Russia 8-1 and Maxim Saforin of St. Petersburg, Russia 11-5 at 84 kg/185 lbs. but lost to Yegenee Eurofilov of Uzbekistan 3-0 in the quarterfinals.    Duaine Martin (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) and Ken Owens (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) also competed in the competition. Martin went 1-1 in pool competition at 60 kg/132 lbs. Owens was 0-2 at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
