SECRETARY OF EDUCATION'S COMMISSION ON OPPORTUNITY IN ATHLETICS TO HOLD FINAL PUBLIC TOWN HALL HEARING NOV. 20-21 IN SAN DIEGO The U.S. Secretary of Education's Commission on Opportunity in Athletics has scheduled its final public hearing on Nov. 20-21 at the Wyndham San Diego at Emerald Plaza, 400 W. Broadway in San Diego. The purpose of the town hall hearing is to gather input and information about Title IX and equal opportunity in athletics. The hearing will focus on the affects of Title IX on walk-on athletes, the financing of intercollegiate athletic programs and the collection of statistics on sports programs. The meeting will feature testimony from prominent educators and sports administrators as well as a public comment period. On June 27, U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige appointed the Commission on Opportunity in Athletics to examine ways to strengthen enforcement and expand opportunities to ensure fairness for all high school and college athletes. By Jan. 31, 2003, the commission will provide Secretary Paige with findings and recommendations that address the availability of athletic opportunities at the high school and college levels. The San Diego hearing represents the fourth and final town hall meeting. Previous hearings were held in Atlanta, Chicago and San Diego. The commissioners will hold two working meetings in Philadelphia and Washington in December and January. The panel is co-chaired by Cynthia Cooper, chief executive officer of the sports marketing company, ProHaven, Inc., and former head coach of the Phoenix Mercury WNBA basketball team, and Ted Leland, director of athletics at Stanford University. The agenda follows: Wednesday, Nov. 20 9 a.m. -- Opening remarks by Co-chairs Cooper and Leland. 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. -- Testimony from invited witnesses on three panels: Panel One: * Val Ackerman, president, Women's National Basketball Association. * Corey Bray, assistant director of research, Education Services, National Collegiate Athletic Association. * Jerry Kravits, statistician, Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Education, and professor of statistics, Howard University. * Jon Vegosen, United States Tennis Association. Panel Two: * Andrew Zimbalist, Department of Economics, Smith College. * Chuck Neinas, president, Neinas Sports Services. * Rick Bay, executive director of intercollegiate athletics and special assistant to the president, San Diego State University. * Rosa Perez, president, CaƱada College, and representative, California Community College Commission on Athletics. * John Welty, president, California State University, Fresno. Panel Three: * Sam Bell, president, College Track Coaches Association. * Donna Lopiano, Women's Sports Foundation. * Debbie Corum, associate commissioner, Southeastern Conference. * Kimberly Schuld, special assistant, United States Commission on Civil Rights. 2-5 p.m. - Public comment period Thursday, Nov. 21 9 a.m. to noon - The commissioners will deliberate on the development of their findings and recommendations.
