The national debate concerning Title IX, which has been enhanced by the work of The Secretary of Education's Commission on Opportunity in Athletics, has allowed the general public to share its thoughts and experiences concerning this important legislation. The 15-member Commission has held public Town Hall hearings in three cities (Atlanta, Chicago, Colorado Springs) and will wrap up the public portion of its work in San Diego, Calif., Nov. 20-21. For those who were unable to attend one of the Town Hall meetings, the Commission has provided an excellent opportunity for anybody to submit their thoughts to the government. You can send written submissions to the Commission on Opportunity in Athletics by email, FAX or mail by Friday, November 29, 2002. Methods to submit your written thoughts are: 1. Internet. We encourage you to send your comments through the Internet to the following address: OpportunityinAthletics@ed.gov. 2. Facsimile. You may submit comments by facsimile at (202) 260-4560. 3. Mail. You may submit your comments to The Secretary of Education's Commission on Opportunity in Athletics, 400 Maryland Avenue, SW., ROB-3 Room 3060, Washington, DC 20202. Due to delays in mail delivery caused by heightened security, please allow adequate time for the mail to be received. It is highly recommended that you choose either e-mail or FAX to send in your written thoughts. The security delays with mailed letters could make your written thoughts arrive after the deadline. PLEASE USE THE E-MAIL OR FAX OPTIONS TO MAKE SURE YOUR THOUGHTS ARE REGISTERED WITH THE COMMISSION. For more information, view the Commission's Web site at: http://www.ed.gov/inits/commissionsboards/athletics. The Commission office number is 202-708-7417. The Commission will produce a report no later than January 31, 2003, outlining its findings relative to the opportunities for men and women in athletics in order to improve the effectiveness of Title IX. By sending in your thoughts, even if you did not attend a hearing, you will play an important part in the future of Title IX and its enforcement. * For those who have done considerable research and study of the Title IX issue, this is a great opportunity to have your work shared with people who may affect the direction of Title IX in the future. * For those who have personal stories on how Title IX and its enforcement has affected their lives, this is an important way that they can share their own stories about the law in action. * And for those who want to make a difference in ensuring the future of sports opportunities for all, this is a chance to have your voice heard. Leaders in the wrestling community, as well as many other sports, have voiced their opposition to proportionality, one of the enforcement mechanisms for Title IX. They believe that proportionality is a strict gender quota which should be abolished because it eliminates sports opportunities. They contend that it does not reflect the original intent of the law, to provide fair opportunity for all. Anyone who would like additional information on Title IX and its affect on wrestling and other Olympic sports, feel free to contact Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling's Director of Special Projects. He can be reached by e-mail at gabbott@usawrestling.org , as well as office phone 719-598-8181 or cell phone 719-338-7226. Don't let this chance to make a difference in the Title IX debate get by you!!! WRITE TO THE COMMISSION AND GET IT IN BEFORE THE NOVEMBER 29 DEADLINE...
