TheMat.com Projected PAC-10 Finish: 1. Boise State 2. Arizona State 3. Oregon 4. Oregon State 5. Stanford 6. Cal Poly 7. Cal State Bakersfield 8. California-Davis 9. Cal State Fullerton 10. Portland State Boise State and Arizona State will battle for the top position in the PAC-10, which is starting to creep back up into the national spotlight after a brief hiatus. Boise State returns NCAA title contender Ben VomBaur (125) to their lineup along with a strong supporting cast. This team returns seven starters overall from their PAC-10 championship team of last year. The light weights (125-141) are some of the strongest in the nation, and they will carry this team this year. Arizona State brings back NCAA runner-up Eric Larkin (149), who will move up in weight this year. With Mike Simpson (133) moving up in weight and the return of a much improved Kellan Fluckiger (285), this team could be the one to beat in the PAC-10 by season's end. Oregon has a solid starting lineup, but the key for them will be their health. Losing an All-American and two other NCAA qualifiers does not help, but All-American candidates Shane Webster (174) and Eric Webb (285) should fuel this team. Oregon State brings back conference champion Jason Lovell (197), but have a lot of question marks at a lot of other weights right now. If they talent that is in the lineup can develop right, this team can place in the top three in the PAC-10. Coach Steve Buddie is getting Stanford back where they feel they belong, near the top of the conference. This team is packed with talented youth, including sophomores Luke Metzler (133) and Matt Gentry (157), who both should surprise some people nationally. Cal Poly has put together a solid coaching staff and will soon be a power in the PAC-10, but not quite yet. David Schenk (197) is the leader of this team, but transfer Steve Esparza (141) could have a huge season. Bakersfield brings back six starters including NCAA qualifiers Efren Ceballos (125) and Matt Sanchez (133). Both are sophomores and will be forces in this conference for years to come, but they have little in a supporting cast. NCAA qualifiers Urijah Faber (133) and Jeremiah Jarvis (157) are back for California-Davis. With four other starters back for this squad, the Aggies could have a solid dual team, but there does not seem to be enough fire power to get this team into the top half of the conference. Rowdy Lundegreen (184) will lead Cal State Fullerton along with Juan Mora (141) and Chris Carlino (165). There are some bright spots in this lineup, but outside of these three, the success of the other individuals is not very clear. Portland State could finish a couple of spots ahead of 10th, but it will be tough. They lost their best wrestler from last year. Quinn Collett (174) and Randy Davidson (285) should have solid seasons, but it may not be enough to lead this squad.
