Two-time Defending NCAA Champion Minnesota to Hold Wrestle-Offs

The two-time defending national champion Golden Gopher wrestling team will hold wrestle-offs Friday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m., in the Bierman Gym on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The wrestle-offs are free and open to the public and media. Seating in the Bierman Gym is limited. Coaches expect 20-30 matches to be contested during the wrestle-offs.    Minnesota, the reigning National Duals, Big Ten and NCAA champion, returns six All-Americans and seven NCAA qualifiers from a team that completed a 19-0 record for the school1s first undefeated season. The Golden Gophers boast two returning national champions in 149-pound Jared Lawrence and 157-pound Luke Becker. The Maroon and Gold also return All-Americans in Ryan Lewis (133 pounds; second in 2002), Jacob Volkmann (165; fourth in 2001), Damion Hahn (184; fifth in 2002) and Garrett Lowney (heavyweight; fifth in 2002).    Minnesota opens the 2002-03 season on Friday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m., with the Minnesota vs. Iowa Showdown at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.
