The seven-athlete U.S. Women's World Wrestling Team weighed in and received the draw for the 2002 Women's World Wrestling Championships in Halkida, Greece. The U.S. team is talented and seasoned, with four past World finalists and all seven members with past World Championships. The team will have to be sharp, right from the start, as some of the U.S. athletes received challenging opponents in their pools. Three of the U.S. wrestlers will face opponents from Japan, the nation that has won the most World Team titles in women's wrestling. These early pool bouts will set the tone for the entire World Championships. "We had a tough draw," said National Women's Coach Terry Steiner. "We have to be able to wrestle right away. We are not here to take second or get out of our pool. We are here to win. It doesn't matter if it is the first or last match." "This is something we talked about often," said Head Coach Chris Horpel. "They are prepared for good matches right out of the chute. We have to get warmed up and ready to go." A weight-by-weight look at each U.S. draw, and a quote by each U.S. athlete: 48 kg/105.5 lbs. - Patricia Miranda, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Dave Schultz WC) Miranda drew Ida Hellstrom of Sweden and Tsogtbazar Enkhjargal of Mongolia in pool No. 3. Neither one of these opponents have been a recent World placewinner. Miranda was second at the 2000 World Championships, her only other World appearance. "I really feel like I'll do what I am capable of," said Miranda. "That's a satisfying feeling. I don't know what that will translate into the final standings. I feel what I have control over will be pretty good and that makes me satisfied. I have to put in a pitch for the tremendous support we have this year; the coaching staff and USA Wrestling have come out in full force. That makes me feel good about going out on the mat tomorrow." 51 kg /112.25 lbs. - Stephanie Murata, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sunkist Kids) Murata will face Chiharu Icho of Japan and Marta Wojtanowska of Poland in pool No. 1. Icho is the 2002 University World Champion and 2001 Junior World Champion. Wojtanowska was fourth in the last two European Championships. Murata was a 2001 World silver medalist, and is battling in her sixth World meet. "We had a good training camp," said Murata. "We came prepared. We came to win. We have to be ready for the first match, and go from there." 55 kg /121 lbs.- Tina George, Colorado Springs, Colo. (U.S. Army) George was drawn into Pool No. 6, and will have three opponents in her pool: Josiane-Patricia Soloniaina of Madigascar, Nadine Tokar of Switzerland and Vanessa Boubryemm of France. None of these opponents have past World-level achievements. George is competing in her third World Championships event. "I'm feeling like I am ready," said George. "I have prepared more than any other year, mentally and physically. I am ready to go. That is the important thing. The weight came off really easy this year." 59 kg /130 lbs.- Lauren Lamb, Farmington N.Y. (Michigan WC) Lamb will face Rena Iwama of Japan and Dashjanchiv Bottsetseg of Mongolia in pool No. 5. Iwama dropped down a weight from the past, as she was a 2000 World silver medalist at 62 kg. Iwama is also a past World Cup champion. The Mongolian athlete is not internationally known. Lamb is competing in her sixth World Championship, and has placed fifth in the World three times. "I feel great and I'm ready to go," said Lamb. "I have been here too many times to go home disappointed again. I really feel ready." 63 kg/138.75 lbs.- Sara McMann, Lock Haven, Pa. (Sunkist Kids) McMann will compete in pool No. 4 against Yoon So-Young of Korea and Kaori Icho of Japan. Icho has moved up a weight class from the initial entry list. She was an Asian Games silver medalist at this weight class in 2002. The Korean opponent has not yet been an international placewinner. McMann is wrestling in her third straight World Championships. "I feel great; this is the best I've ever felt," said McMann. "I have never been so relaxed and at ease competing in another country. I do my best when I'm like that. This is my year." 67 kg/147.5 lbs. - Kristie Marano, Albany, N.Y. (ATWA) Marano is competing against Stanka Zlateva of Bulgaria and Shannon Samler of Canada in pool No. 4. Samler placed sixth in the 2000 World Championships and was second at the 2002 University World Championships. Zlateva was seventh in the 2001 World Championships. Marano has won five previous World medals, a gold in 2000 and four silver medals (1996-99). "I have been at the OTC for a month and did a lot of training," said Marano. "I have been on the go since March. I feel a lot stronger this time around. I have done a lot more, especially with physical therapy. I have a new knee now. That's the only thing that has changed." 72 kg/158.5 lbs. - Toccara Montgomery, Cleveland, Ohio (Sunkist Kids) Montgomery drew into pool No. 5, where she will face Xu Wang of China and Gulbanu Abdullina of Kazakhstan. Neither opponent has made any major World achievements. Montgomery was second at the 2001 World Championships. "I am going in to win," said Montgomery. "Yesterday took my mind off wrestling. I got some stress relief and I feel good." The United States looks to challenge among the top nations of the world. The best finish by a U.S. team was in 1999, when the squad won the World Team Title, edging Japan by one point. To reach that goal this year, the U.S. may have to find a way to beat Japan again, as well as the rest of the talented field. The excitement begins first thing Saturday morning.
