Three U.S. wrestlers captured medals at the 2002 CISM Military World Championships held in Talinn, Estonia, Oct. 24-27. Freestyle wrestlers Max Shingara (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) captured a bronze medal at 66 kg/132 lbs. and Franklin Lashley (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) won a silver medal at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. joined Greco-Roman wrestler Keith Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), who captured a silver medal at 74 kg/163 lbs, as the only medal winners for the U.S. Overall, the U.S. team placed 5th with 54 team points. Russia was the top team in both freestyle with 61 points and Greco-Roman with 55 points in capturing the overall team title with 116 points. The U.S. had 10 out of 12 wrestlers place in the top ten in their respective weight classes. 2002 World Champion Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) lost his first match in Greco-Roman pool competition at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. to place 10th. Other placewinners for the U.S. in Greco-Roman were Anthony Gibbons (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Glen Nieradka (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 60 kg/132 lbs., Aaron Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Joseph Hicks (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Freestyle placewinners included Duaine Martin (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Paul Devlin (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. 23 nations competed in the 2002 CISM Military Championships, including many of the most successful wrestling nations in the world. At the 2001 CISM Military Championships held in Split, Croatia, the U.S. placed fifth as a team overall but only had one medal winner - Marcel Cooper (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) won the silver medal at 152 lbs. in Greco-Roman.
