TheMat.com Projected ACC Finish: 1. North Carolina 2. North Carolina State 3. Virginia 4. Maryland 5. Duke The ACC has gotten much better over the course of the past four or five years. But while Maryland, Virginia and even Duke have begun to attract some of the top talent in the nation, one constant continues to remain - the two schools that lead the pack are located within 10 miles of each other. North Carolina and North Carolina State both return strong lineups. NC State won the ACC title last year, but losing their top wrestler last year as well as another NCAA Qualifiers hurts their chances of repeating. George Cintron (125), Jake Giamoni (149) and Dustin Kawa (165) are all back and should be dominant, and eight starters will return overall, but this team still has some inexperience at key weights. North Carolina returns All-American Chris Rodrigues (125) along with Evan Sola (133) and Mark Canty (174). They could have two All-Americans this year, but in smaller conference tournaments, usually the best dual team will win the tournament title as well. The Tar Heels must develop wrestlers at 141, 197 and 285 in order to win the title, but solid coaching staff should help achieve that goal. Virginia, Maryland and Duke are the rest of the pack. Virginia loses two NCAA Qualifiers from last year, but at the same time will return two ACC champions - Joe Alexander (133) and Tim Foley (157). Bob Seidel (141) and Josh Etu (285) help with strength in the lineup, but there are a lot of new faces to develop and see how they handle Division I wrestling. Maryland lost a four-time ACC champion and return only one NCAA Qualifier - Jake Stork (184). This team will be strong in the upper weights, but a lack of depth and experience will hurt them at the lower weights. Duke is getting better, but still have a journey to move out of the bottom of the ACC. NCAA Qualifiers Tommy Hoang (125) and Mike Mitchell (165) are at tough weights within the conference, meaning some tough wrestlers will be left at home this year in the postseason. Up and down, this Duke team is better than any in years past and they have experience on their side, but placing anything higher than fourth in this conference will be tough for this team to achieve.
