A pair of World Champions from Bulgaria and a young talent from Georgia have accepted invitations to compete in the historic new Kurt Angle Classic, a challenge competition featuring U.S. wrestling stars and many of the best wrestling athletes from across the world. The event will take place at the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, La., November 9, 2002. The most recent confirmations for the event came from two-time Olympic champion and reigning World Champion Armen Nazarian of Bulgaria, two-time World Champion Serafim Barzakov of Bulgaria and two-time Junior World medalist David Otiasvili of Georgia. This finalizes the field of foreign stars that will travel to New Orleans to face America's best stars. Two of the athletes are replacements for competitors who have been injured and will not be able to attend. Barzakov will replace 2002 World Champion Elbrus Tedeev of Ukraine and Otiasvili will replace 2000 Olympic silver medalist Artur Taymazov of Uzbekistan. This brings the total to 15 World-class wrestling stars from foreign nations who have agreed to participate in this exciting new competition. These international athletes have won a total of 10 World Championships and three Olympic Games championships. In addition, there has been a scheduling change for the event. The first session featuring U.S. military athletes in a dual meet format, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8, has been cancelled. The athletes were not able to compete due to military considerations. In its place, there will be a USA Louisiana All-star dual featuring Louisiana high school athletes to be coached by Olympic Champions Kevin Jackson and Kenny Monday. All fans may attend the first session for free. The two sessions on Saturday, Nov. 9 will be unchanged, featuring the top U.S. stars in all three Olympic styles (men's freestyle, men's Greco-Roman, women's freestyle) fighting against top international competitors. Nazarian, 28, won Olympic gold medals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games in Greco-Roman. He won his first World gold medal at the recent 2002 World Greco-Roman Championships. Other World medals include silver medals in 1993 and 1995 and bronze medals in 1997, 1998 and 1999. That gives Nazarian eight World-level medals to date. He has also won five European titles and a World Military Games gold medal. Nazarian will face Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 60 kg/132 lbs. at the Kurt Angle Classic. They met during the quarterfinals of the World Championships in September, with Nazarian scoring a technical fall victory. Barzakov, 27, won World gold medals in freestyle in 1998 and 2001. He was an Olympic silver medalist at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and also competed at the 1996 Olympics. He has placed fifth at three World Championships (1997, 1999, 2002). He also boasts three European titles. Barzakov will face Chris Bono (Gilbert, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 66 kg/145.5 pounds at the Kurt Angle Classic. Otiasvili, 22, placed fourth at the 2002 World Championships in freestyle wrestling. He was a 1996 Cadet World Champion, and claimed bronze medals at the 1999 and 2000 Junior World Championships. Otiasvili was second at the 2000 European Championships. Otiasvili will face 2000 Olympian Kerry McCoy (State College, Pa./New York AC) at 120 kg/264.5 pounds at the Kurt Angle Classic. The Kurt Angle Classic features a "USA vs. The World" format, and will spotlight Olympic and World Champion athletes in the three Olympic styles of wrestling: men's freestyle, men's Greco-Roman and women's freestyle. All wrestlers will be paid to compete, with bonuses available to the winners. In all, the total purse for the event will exceed $75,000. The Kurt Angle Classic is part of the "Show of Strength", a competition that will include body building, power lifting, arm wrestling and a strong man contest. Included will be a hall with over 300 exhibits of products, supplements and other resources useful in athletics. "I am excited and honored to be hosting this event along with USA Wrestling," stated Angle, who after capturing Olympic gold in 1996 went on to become a WWE superstar. "This is my way of giving back to the sport of wrestling. It should be an incredible atmosphere and putting the top wrestlers in the world against each other should help the sport of wrestling as well." Wrestling will take place in an entertaining atmosphere. Matches will be enhanced with music, up-close interviews and cutting-edge production techniques that are certain to make this one of the most fan-friendly and stunning amateur wrestling events ever.
