SPC Dremiel Byers, a 2002 World Champion in Greco-Roman wrestling, will lead a strong team of U.S. military athletes that will compete at the 2002 CISM World Military Wrestling Championships in Tallinn, Estonia, Oct. 24-27. Byers, who competes for the U.S. Army, won the World gold medal at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. at the recent World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships held in Moscow, Russia. Byers became only the fourth U.S. athlete to win a World Greco-Roman gold medal. This will be the first competition for Byers since his historic World Championships victory in September. CISM stands for International Military Sports Council and its theme is "Friendship Through Sports." The organization produces world military championships in many sports. This will be the 21st World Military Wrestling Championship hosted by CISM. The U.S. Greco-Roman team will feature four athletes from the U.S. Army, including Byers, 2001 U.S. World Team member Sgt Keith Sieracki at 74 kg/163 lbs. plus SPC Anthony Gibbons at 55 kg/121 lbs. and SSgt Glen Nieradka at 60 kg/132 lbs. Nieradka and Sieracki were U.S. Nationals champions in 2002 and hold No. 2 U.S. Senior rankings at their weight class. Representing the U.S. Marine Corps on the Greco-Roman team are Sgt James Shillow at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Capt. Dan Hicks at 96 kg/211.25 lbs. Shillow holds a No. 2 U.S. national team ranking at his weight class. One member of the U.S. Air Force team, SRA Aaron Sieracki, will compete at 84 kg/185 lbs. The freestyle team also features four U.S. Army wrestlers: PFC Max Shingara at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Sgt Eddie Woody at 74 kg/163 lbs., SPC Franklin Lashley at 96 kg/211.25 lbs. and SPC Paul Devlin at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. The other two freestyle team members are from the U.S. Marine Corps: Sgt Duaine Martin at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Sgt Kenny Owens at 84 kg/185 lbs. The Head Coach of the U.S. team is SSgt Shon Lewis of the U.S. Army and the Assistant Coach is Richard Estrella of the U.S. Air Force. Lewis was the assistant coach of the 2002 U.S. World Team in Moscow, Russia, this year. The freestyle competition will be held first, on Oct. 24 and 25. The Greco-Roman competition follows on Oct. 26 and 27. According to the CISM Wrestling Championships web page, 23 nations have confirmed participation, including many of the most successful wrestling nations in the world. Those nations listed at this time include: Italy, Slovakia, Tunisia, Germany, Ukraine, Greece, United States, Qatar, Belarus, Finland, Sri Lanka, China, Uzbekistan, Poland, Turkey, Turkey, Russia, Estonia, Romania, Lithuania, Azerbaijan, Latvia, Kyrgyzstan, Canada. The U.S. team participated in a Training Camp at Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Va., October 14-20. The team was determined based upon results of the 2002 U.S. Armed Forces Wrestling Championships. The most recent CISM Championships was held in Split, Croatia in 2001. Marcel Cooper of the U.S. Marine Corps won the silver medal at 152 pounds in Greco-Roman, the only U.S. medalist at the event. The United States finished fourth in the freestyle competition, eighth in Greco-Roman and fifth place overall.
