One more step will be taken towards a competitive professional wrestling league on Oct. 26 as RealPro Wrestling and Epicenter Films will host a television pilot for the creation of a wrestling-based series at Los Angeles Center Studios in Los Angeles, Calif. The pilot will be filmed in a gladiator-style setting at the studio. Wrestlers will compete on a stage surrounded by a pit where wrestling fans will be seated. The event will include music, dancers and video introductions of each competitor. This pilot is being taped in hopes of presenting a marketable professional wrestling league to leading sports television networks across the nation. If the league is picked up by a network following the pilot, RealProWrestling plans to tape a series of events for release on national television. Taping could begin as early as this winter. Both international wrestling styles, freestyle and Greco-Roman, will be represented at the pilot taping. Wrestlers will be evenly split up into two teams for each style, the Black Team and the Red Team. 2002 U.S. Freestyle World Team members competing in the RealPro Wrestling pilot include freestyle wrestlers Stephen Abas (Fresno, Calif./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Eric Guerrero (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) at 60 kg/132 lbs., Chris Bono (Gilbert, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Tim Hartung (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs., and Kerry McCoy (Bethlehem, Pa./New York AC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. 2002 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team members competing are Brandon Paulson (Anoka, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 60 kg/132 lbs., Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. Making returns to the wrestling mat for the first time since the 2001 Greco-Roman World Championships are Matt Lindland (Oregon City, Ore./Sunkist Kids) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Rulon Gardner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Gardner captured the 2000 Olympic gold medal after defeating previously undefeated Alexander Karelin of Russia. He followed that by winning the 2001 World Championship before missing last season due to a frostbite injury. Lindland, who currently competes for the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), was a silver medalist at the 2000 Olympic Games and the 2001 World Championships. Paulson, a 1996 Olympic silver medalist and 2001 World silver medalist, will face Lindsay Durlacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./Wildcat WC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. in a rematch of the 2002 U.S. World Team Trials finals where Paulson defeated Durlacher by 6-0 and 8-1 scores. Another intriguing matchup in Greco-Roman will be at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., where Gruenwald will face Dennis Hall (Plover, Wis./Sunkist Kids). These two wrestlers have faced each other for years. Hall defeated Gruenwald twice to capture Wisconsin state titles in high school and Gruenwald defeated Hall to earn spots on the 2000 U.S. Greco-Roman Olympic Team and 2001 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team. There are slight rule modifications for RealPro Wrestling. There is no three point minimum score required to win a match. If both wrestlers are on their feet working for a takedown, the wrestlers who makes his opponent touch out of bounds first gets one point if no other scoring occurs at the same time, similar to sumo wrestling. In both styles, passivity will be called using an electronic interface to control an interactive stalling light display meter controlled by the mat chairman. In future competitions, this meter will be controlled by a panel of officials. This action meter will provide continuous feedback to the wrestlers, coaches and fans as to the threat of a passivity call. Periods of inactivity will lower the action meter of an athlete while action will raise the meter. When a wrestler's action meter is empty, the mat officials will call passivity. If a wrestler is called for passivity three times during the match, he is automatically disqualified. Other modifications will be that the mat officials will make all calls, unless he requests help from the mat judge or a coach challenges a call. Each team will receive three television replay challenges per dual. Teams will score 15 points for wins by fall, disqualification or injury default and 10 points for a technical fall. For a decision, the difference in match points will be awarded to the winning wrestler's team. There is limited open seating for fans. Tickets are free, but less than 100 remain.
