HEMPSTEAD, New York Hofstra University Head Wrestling Coach Tom Ryan today announced the appointment of Mr. Derek Brophy as First Assistant Coach and Mr. Angelo Zegarelli as Second Assistant Coach. Their appointments are effective immediately. Brophy, a native of Babylon, New York, graduated from Lehigh University in 1991 where he received a degree in business economics. While at Lehigh, Brophy competed on the Division I Wrestling team before an injury ended his career as a junior. At the time of his injury, Brophy was 15-2 and ranked ninth in the nation at 177 pounds. In addition to his collegiate experience, Brophy was a USA Wrestling Junior National freestyle champion, an Empire State Games gold medalist in greco-roman and freestyle wrestling, a New York State champion in freestyle and greco-roman wrestling and an Amateur Wrestling News All-American. Brophy comes to Hofstra after serving as varsity wrestling coach at Commack High School, where he revitalized a floundering program and led it to a 7-1-1 record in 1999. That earned Commack the Section XI Most Improved Team Award. Zegarelli graduated from West Virginia University in 2000 where he received a degree in sports management. While competing on the West Virginia wrestling squad, Zegarelli was named honorable mention All-American and was a four-time NCAA qualifier. He also trained at the Unites States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs over the summer from 1997 through 1999. Zegarelli has served as a clinician at the Zeke Jones Wrestling Camp in 1998 and 1999 and was the assistant camp director at the All-Star Wrestling Camp on Long Island in 1999. Hofstra Wrestling opens its season on November 11 at 10 a.m. when it travels to the Colonial Open at SUNY Binghamton.
